Indians' wait for win continuesChicago Christian 40, Marengo 6 Why Chicago Christian won: Marengo couldn’t stop Chicago Christian’s passing game, which accounted for 369 yards. Turning point: Four second-quarter touchdown passes by Alex Haan put the game out of reach. Most outstanding player: Haan was 19-for-26 passing for 369 yards and five touchdowns. MARENGO – Marengo could have found a better opponent to open its era under new football coach Matt Lynch. Chicago Christian, which finished 9-1 last season, ran out to a large halftime lead and defeated the Indians, 40-6, Friday night at Rod Poppe Fields. Marengo showed flashes of a cohesive offense in the fourth quarter, highlighted by Scott Donley’s 28-yard touchdown run. The Indians also drew cheers from their fans with a goal-line stand in the final period, but the Knights’ 33-0 halftime lead was way too much. Chicago Christian scored late in the first quarter on Alex Haan’s 92-yard pass to Andy Stuursma. Haan tossed four more scoring strikes in the second quarter. The loss ran Marengo’s string to 20 consecutive regular-season losses. Lynch wants his players to look at the present, not the past, and hopes the team takes a renewed spirit this season. “We didn’t quit and played hard right to the end,” Lynch said. “They’re a playoff team and no one said they wouldn’t be tough. We’re going to work hard and continue to preach about staying focused. Losing is contagious, and so is winning.” Donley was thrilled his team reached the end zone. “All I can say is I owe it to allthe blocking,” Donley said. “The quarterback [A.J. Lohff] saw it open and we got the TD. I’m pretty excited that we got that TD.” |
