
PREP ROUNDUP: Hampshire girls blank WinnebagoSTILLMAN VALLEY – The tone was set in the first half after Hampshire’s girls soccer team scored two goals in the IHSA Class A Stillman Valley Sectional semifinals. The Whip-Purs went on to a 4-0 win against fifth-seeded Winnebago on Thursday. Christine Schumacher scored the first goal and added two assists for top-seeded Hampshire. “We had a balanced attack working for us tonight,” Hampshire coach Pat O’Brien said. “The girls were hungry to get back to the sectional finals.” Kelly Plichta had the other first-half goal and an assist for the Whip-Purs (15-6-2). Kelsey Burke and Alex Field each added a goal in the second half. “The hard work they put forth all year is paying dividends,” O’Brien said. The Whip-Purs advanced to the finals Monday. They will play the winner of today’s match between second-seeded Rockford Christian and sixth-seeded Kirkland Hiawatha. BASEBALL Class 1A Ashton-Franklin Center Regional: At Ashton, sixth-seeded Alden-Hebron (20-3-1) defeated fourth-seeded Ashton-Franklin Center, 2-0, scoring two runs in the eighth inning of their regional semifinal. Mark Winkelman (7-0) allowed five hits, walked one, struck out 18 and had a double and an RBI for A-H. Zak Engelbrecht had the other RBI for the Giants. A-H lost to Westminster Christian last year in the regional final and will get a rematch Saturday against the No. 1 seed in this year’s final. Class 2A Stillman Valley Regional: At Stillman Valley, third-seeded Hampshire defeated seventh-seeded Rockford Christian Life, 4-1. Ryan Burke had a solo homer in the first inning, and Tyler Bentley went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored for the Whip-Purs (15-13). Hampshire plays top-seeded Stillman Valley for the regional title Saturday. Prairie Ridge 12, Jacobs 0 (5 inn.): At Algonquin, Joe Zwierzynski pitched three perfect innings, and reliever Sam Zagone finished with two more perfect innings for the Wolves (23-8) in their Fox Valley Conference crossover win. Zagone struck out each of the six batters he faced. Logan Olson scored three runs, stole two bases and had four RBIs for the Wolves. The Golden Eagles dropped to 11-12. Huntley 8, Round Lake 0: At Huntley, Jeff Fabis went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs for Huntley (18-13) in its non-conference win. Nathan Sopena added a home run, two runs and an RBI for the Red Raiders. Rockford Lutheran 8, Harvard 5: At Harvard, Chad Melson had a homer and three RBIs in the non-conference loss for the Hornets (6-13). SOFTBALL Jacobs 11, Dundee-Crown (5 inn.): At Algonquin, the Golden Eagles finished in first place in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division with a 15-0 division record. Lauren Arceneaux was 3-for-3 with a homer for Jacobs (27-3). Dayna Schultz went 1-for-2 for the Chargers (2-20, 0-15). McHenry 9, CL South 2: At Crystal Lake, Chelsea Mayer led the Warriors (19-9, 9-6) with two homers and four RBIs in their FVC Valley victory. Emily Mahoney was 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Gators (15-12, 7-8). Prairie Ridge 10, Richmond-Burton 2: At Richmond, Erika Trojan went 3-for-4 for the Wolves (19-10) in their non-conference win. Caitlin Richert was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk for the Rockets (11-18). Harvard 14, Rockford Lutheran 0 (6 inn.): At Rockford, Deana Cradic went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, and Jannet Garcia scored three runs and had a double and an RBI in the non-conference win for the Hornets (18-6).
BOYS TENNIS Spirit of the Northwest Tournament: At Wauconda, Johnsburg scored 20 points to take second in the tournament and finish in a tie with Wauconda for second place in the season team standings. Grant won the tournament with 262⁄3 points and finished first for the season. The event concluded Thursday after it was suspended Tuesday.
