Chargers outmatched by Vikings

CARPENTERSVILLE – Dundee-Crown did not gain many yards Friday night against state powerhouse Geneva, but they might have gained something more valuable.

Experience.

The Chargers were undersized and overmatched as Geneva rolled to a 49-7 victory to open the season at Dundee-Crown.

Geneva all-state running back Michael Ratay pounded Dundee-Crown’s defense for 187 yards rushing and five touchdowns, all in the first half.

“We had guys there and he just bounced off,” Dundee-Crown coach Mike Davis said. “We didn’t tackle well, but he’s good. If you don’t get four or five guys on him, you’re not going to stop him.”

D-C lone bright spot came on a 71-yard touchdown run by Ian Salvatini during a second half that featured a running clock.

Geneva’s defense frustrated quarterback Logan Kissack and the team’s running attack for most of the night.

But Kissack said the team gained valuable insight from the loss. He completed five of his last seven passes in the game, with tight end Brendan Schumacher the most frequent target.

“I think we gained a lot,” Kissack said. “We go out there, we’re facing the No. 4 team in Class 7A. It really showed us what we needed to work on.”
