Woodstock's offense sputters in red zone in 7-0 loss

HOFFMAN ESTATES – Woodstock had the ball inside the 5-yard line twice against Hoffman Estates but could not take advantage of the scoring opportunities in a 7-0 loss to the Hawks on Friday night.

Blue Streaks coach Steve Beard said he thought his team played pretty well on offense and defense but lost the game on turnovers and special teams.

The game’s only touchdown came after an interception thrown by Woodstock quarterback Derek Brown in the first quarter.

Hoffman Estates took over on the Blue Streaks’ 31-yard line and needed only five plays to put the ball in the end zone.

“That was the difference in the game,” Beard said.

Woodstock put together a 13-play scoring drive in the second quarter that moved the ball to the Hoffman Estates 3-yard line.

The drive included a 15-yard pass from Brown to Zach Shannon and a 20-yard run by Brown, but the Streaks could not convert on a 20-yard field goal attempt.

Brown said Hoffman Estates played a different defensive scheme than Woodstock anticipated, and it caused some problems, particularly in the passing game.

The Hawks stacked the defensive line and the defensive backfield to counter Woodstock’s passing game.

“All week we were practicing against a 3-5-3 [defense],” Brown said. “They came out in a 4-3 and it showed.”

After making some adjustments at halftime, Woodstock appeared to have solved its offensive woes in the opening drive of the second half. Starting on their own 20-yard line, the Streaks moved the ball on a 10-play drive to the Hawks’ 1-yard line.

A fumbled handoff between Brown and Kevin Smith ended the scoring chance.

“We moved the ball,” Brown said. “Turnovers killed us.”

Smith led Woodstock in rushing with 88 yards on 25 attempts.

Brown passed for 63 yards, completing eight of 16 pass attempts with one interception.

Shannon caught two passes for 37 yards to lead the Streaks.
