Marian baseball team sweeps ACC

WOODSTOCK – Marian Central’s baseball team outscored Aurora Central Catholic by 14 runs collectively in a Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader sweep Saturday.

“We were very advantageous at the plate, and we did a good job of putting the ball in play,” Marian coach Gregg Wikierak said.

Marian junior first baseman Dave Parr drove in a run and scored twice in the first game as the Hurricanes (9-4 overall, 4-1 SCC) beat ACC, 8-1. Jim Furlano went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for Marian in a 9-2 win in Game 2.

Woodstock 12, Johnsburg 2 (5 inn.): At Woodstock, Garrett Gee and Shawn Hovlid homered for the Blue Streaks, who won the FVC crossover. Blake Johnson scored three times and stole two bases for Woodstock (8-5).

David Virgo had an RBI for the Skyhawks (4-8).

CL South 7, Grayslake North 3: At Crystal Lake, Ian Gardeck homered, doubled and scored twice as the Gators won the FVC crossover. Gavin Meyer scored twice and stole three bases for South (10-5).

Kevin Staszczak had two hits and an RBI for the Knights (3-9).

McHenry 4, CL Central 3: At McHenry, Justin Diedrich homered for the Warriors, who won the FVC crossover. Ryan Clark added three hits for McHenry (11-5).

Dominick Minogue doubled and had an RBI for Central (7-6).

Hampshire 8-18, Rockford Lutheran 7-8: At Rockford, the Whip-Purs (10-7) won twice in non-conference play. Bo Price went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the first win for Hampshire. Matt Kuefner homered and drove in four runs in the second win.

Winnebago 9, Marengo 6: At Marengo, Jake Tucker had three hits and two RBIs, but the Indians lost the BNC crossover. Jake Darlington had two doubles and three RBIs for Marengo (2-12).

Harvard 5-12, Oregon 3-4: At Oregon, the Hornets (11-5) swept the Hawks in their BNC crossover doubleheader. Collin Nolen went 5-for-8 and drove in two runs on the day for the Hornets.

Richmond-Burton 11-2, Byron 8-8: At Byron, the Rockets (3-11) split their BNC crossover doubleheader with the Tigers. Harrison Daniels hit a solo home run in the Rockets’ Game 1 victory.

Alden-Hebron 15-16, Ethan Allen 1-3: At Wales, Wis., the Giants scored 31 runs in sweeping the Indian Trails Conference doubleheader. Cody Eskridge went 5-for-9 and drove in four runs on the day.

TENNIS

Schaumburg Invitational: McHenry finished fifth, and Szymon Linette was the top finisher for the Warriors, placing fourth in the
No. 1 singles draw.

Harlem Invitational: At Machesney Park, Cary-Grove’s Chris Federighi finished second at No. 1 singles as the Trojans (27 points) took third in the eight-team event.

Woodstock (14) finished seventh behind a third-place finish by the No. 3 doubles team of Josh Ruben and Luis Ortiz.

Antioch Quadrangular: Marengo went 0-3, losing to Vernon Hills, 5-0, St. Edward, 4-1, and Antioch, 4-1. E.J. Naugle and Nathan Wanfalt won two matches at No. 1 doubles for the only wins for the Indians (0-9).

Calvin Park Doubles Invitational: At Chicago, Hampshire won the tournament as No. 1 doubles team Farhan Shakeel and Johnny Bieber went 5-0 and No. 2 doubles team Christian DeLaCruz and Rob Tiojanco went 4-0.

TRACK

Bartlett Flyin Hawk Invitational: Marshall Happ won the 1,600 meters (4:20.28) to break the meet record and lead Woodstock (26) to a ninth-place finish in the 15-team meet that was won by Thornridge (93).

Freeport Invitational: Marcus Popenfoose set meet records to win the shot put and discus and help Huntley to a third-place team finish. Popenfoose won the shot put, at 56 feet, 11 inches, and the discus, at 172-4.

Alex Beruscha also set a meet record with his 4:26.3 to win the 1,600 meters, a time that also broke his own school record. The Red Raiders’ 4x100 relay team of Josh Sivila, Tor Larkin, Jeremy Hansen and Matt Hammer won in 43.8 seconds, also a school record.

Hononegah won the 10-team meet with 419 points, and East Moline was second with 390. Huntley scored 242.

Geneva Invitational: McHenry took third place as a team with strong field performances, led by Ryan Michel and Bobby Swanson. Dundee-Crown took sixth place.

Michel won the high jump at 6-6 and was second in the triple jump at 43-2. Swanson won the discus (153-8) and was second in the shot put (48-2). The Warriors scored 93 points, finishing behind Niles North (151) and Geneva (99).

D-C scored 43 points and was led by Aaron Reams’ win in the triple jump (44-31⁄2) and Anthony Manfrin’s second-place finish in the 1,600 (4:18.71). Geneva’s Andrew Nelson beat the Chargers’ sophomore in that race with a 4:16.21.
