


PR’s Turner outduels J’burg’s DalyCRYSTAL LAKE – The Fox Valley Conference Fox Division softball opener between Prairie Ridge and Johnsburg shaped up as a pitchers’ duel Thursday, and two of the area’s top pitchers did not disappoint. Prairie Ridge’s Johanna Turner threw a one-hit shutout, striking out 13 and walking none in the Wolves’ 3-0 victory. Erin Smith’s two-run double in the bottom of the sixth gave Prairie Ridge (14-3 overall, 1-0 FVC Fox) some breathing room against Johnsburg ace Amanda Daly. “[Daly is] a strikeout pitcher, and we were able to put the ball in play,” Prairie Ridge coach Mike Buck said. “We only struck out five times.” Daly allowed five hits and two walks to go with her five strikeouts, and Madeline Scharf had the only hit for Johnsburg (6-8, 0-1). CL Central 2, Grayslake Central 1: At Crystal Lake, Kristin Perrone had an RBI as Crystal Lake Central won its FVC Fox opener. Jeannine Vetter got the win, striking out four for the Tigers Huntley 6, Grayslake North 1: At Grayslake, Jenna Mychko had four hits, including a home run, and the Red Raiders won their FVC Fox opener. Sam Clemons struck out 10 to get the win and added two doubles and an RBI for Huntley Woodstock 2, Dundee-Crown 0: At Carpentersville, Woodstock senior Taylor Schulty (2-1) struck out 12 in four innings as the Blue Streaks (5-9, 1-0) beat Dundee-Crown in FVC Valley play. Melanie Love went 2-for-3 for the Chargers (4-7, 0-1). Jacobs 5, Cary-Grove 0: At Algonquin, Kara Arceneaux threw a shutout for the Golden Eagles (7-5, 1-0), scattering six hits and striking out five without a walk. The offense came to life in the fourth inning with three runs. Sara Jacobson, Marissa Lombardo and Amber Livingston each had two hits for Jacobs. The Trojans (7-9, 0-1) managed six hits but could not score in the FVC Valley opener for both teams. CL South 5, McHenry 1: At McHenry, the Gators (12-3, 1-0) beat McHenry (10-4, 0-1) in FVC Valley play. South senior Emily Mahoney (8-2) struck out five and allowed four hits in seven innings. Brenda Botzenhart went 1-for-3 and drove in the Warriors’ run. Burlington Central 12, Harvard 0 (5 inn.): At Burlington, Deana Cradic had Harvard’s lone hit in a five-inning loss for the Hornets (3-9, 1-3) in Big Northern Conference East Division action. Alden-Hebron 3, Faith Christian 0 (8 inn.): At Delavan, Wis., Julie Bryan hit the game-winning, two-run double for the Giants (6-5, 2-0) in their Indian Trails Conference win. SOCCER Woodstock 3, McHenry 0: At Woodstock, three different Blue Streaks scored as Woodstock won the FVC Valley match. Mary Sugden, Alex Krueger and Haley Brasile each scored for Woodstock (7-5, 2-2). Jill Pohlman made 11 saves for the Warriors (7-5, 1-3). CL South 2, Jacobs 0: At Algonquin, Karley Mecko and Ashley Ross scored first-half goals as the Gators won the FVC Valley match. Jessica Taldone made five saves for South (4-8, 2-2). Alyssa Barnard made 14 saves for the Golden Eagles (4-6-2, 1-2). Huntley 2, Prairie Ridge 1: At Huntley, Aimee Wronski and Lauren Opolony scored for the Red Raiders (12-1-1, 2-0 FVC Fox) in FVC Fox play against the Wolves (5-3, 1-1). CL Central 8, Johnsburg 1: At Crystal Lake, Central freshman Maddy Edwards had a hat trick for the Tigers (3-3, 2-1 FVC Fox) in a win against Johnsburg (0-7, 0-3) in FVC Fox play. Grayslake Central 2, Grayslake North 1: At Grayslake, Megan LeBaron scored her ninth goal of the season as the visiting Rams won the FVC Fox match. Morganne Taylor also scored for Central (9-3, 3-1). Alyssa Soulis scored for the Knights (5-5, 1-2). Harvard 6, North Boone 0: At Harvard, Macey Stricker had a goal and an assist for Harvard (6-3 overall, 3-1 BNC East) in a BNC East win. Richmond-Burton 2, Marengo 1: At Richmond, Brittany Bogart had a goal and an assist for the Rockets (7-1, 3-1) in a BNC East win against Marengo (6-5, 1-3). Natalie Haskins scored for Marengo. TRACK Rocket Relays: At Burlington, Alyssa Formas finished sixth in discus (68-1) to get the lone point for Hampshire as the Whip-Purs finished seventh in the seven-team event. Host Burlington Central (1801⁄4) won the event. Byron Invite: Hampshire took sixth place overall with 50 points as the meet was won by host Byron (159 points). Holly Plichta placed second in the 800 meters (2:36) for Hampshire. BADMINTON Waukegan 9, McHenry 6: At McHenry, Erin Freund and Taylor Friedlund won at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, but the Warriors lost the meet.
