Gators outlast Warriors for win

CRYSTAL LAKE – James Vazquez and Gavin Meyer were catalysts for the Crystal Lake South baseball team Monday in the Gators’ 12-8 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division victory against McHenry.

“Those two guys are the spark plugs for our offense and take pressure off the other hitters,” South coach Brian Bogda said.

Senior Greg Pagnotta also drove in two runs and hit a home run for the Gators (13-7 overall, 1-1 FVC Valley).

Senior shortstop Mike Canevello went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for McHenry (14-6, 1-1).

Woodstock 14, Dundee-Crown 4 (5 inn.): At Carpentersville, Shawn Hovlid (4-for-4, double, home run, five RBIs) and Tyler Weiss (2-for-2, RBI) led the Blue Streaks’ offense, which had 17 hits in an FVC Valley win. Derek Brown held D-C to five hits and earned the win for Woodstock
(11-6, 2-0)

Willy Larsen hit a home run and drove in three runs to lead D-C (3-13, 0-2).

Prairie Ridge 5, Johnsburg 3: At Johnsburg, Joe Zwierzynski struck out 13 to get the win for the Wolves (16-5, 2-0) in FVC Fox Division action.

Jerad Grundy struck out 10 in five innings and took the loss. He allowed four runs, only one of which was earned.

He was 3-for-4 for the Skyhawks (5-13, 0-2).

Huntley 15-4, Grayslake North 0-0: At Huntley, Nathan Sopena went 3-for-7 with a double and two RBIs, and Tanner Funke went 4-for-5 with a home run, double and two RBIs in the two games to lead the Red Raiders (15-3-1, 2-0) as they opened play in the FVC Fox with two wins against the Knights. The first game was the conclusion of a suspended game Saturday.

Marian Central 3, Driscoll 0: At Addison, Dave Parr (3-1) struck out seven and limited the Highlanders to two hits for the Hurricanes (12-5, 7-2) in a Suburban Catholic Conference win. Parr also hit a solo home run.

Wauconda 15, Richmond-Burton 11: At Wauconda, C.J. Daniels went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Rockets (5-12), who lost a non-conference game.

Alden-Hebron 13, Rockford Christian Life 12: At Hebron, Dilan Erath went for 4-for-4 with two triples, a double and three RBIs for the Giants (11-3) in their non-conference win.

TRACK

Woodstock Triangular: Woodstock’s 4x800 relay team broke the school record with a time of 8:11.9, Marshall Happ won the 800 (2:03), and the Blue Streaks (67 points) won the meet against Cary-Grove (62) and Dundee-Crown (56). Phil Fairleigh won the 1,600 and 3,200 to pace C-G, and D-C was led by Aaron Reams’ victory in the 110 high hurdles (16.3 seconds).

CL Central Triangular: Jeff Sabatka won the 3,200 meters (9:49.4), and Tyler Helton won the long jump (20 feet, 11⁄4 inches) to lead McHenry (69) in its win against Huntley and Crystal Lake Central. Anthony Niemo won the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.2 seconds) to lead Central (63.5 points) to a second-place finish. Marcus Popenfoose swept the shot put (54-41⁄2) and discus (185-4) for Huntley (52.5 points).

Grayslake Central Triangular: C.J. Stempeck won the high jump (5-2), and the host Rams (76 points) won the meet against Crystal Lake South (68) and Prairie Ridge (38).

South was led by Steve Rodgers’ win in the 800 (2:02.2). Prairie Ridge was led by Jon Rohrer’s win in the 100 high hurdles (16.3 seconds).

Johnsburg Triangular: David Grady won the 300 intermediate hurdles (45.35 seconds) and the 100 high hurdles (16.38) for Jacobs (94.5 points) in its victory against Johnsburg (63.5) and Grayslake North (10). Steve Seydel won the 100 (11.36 seconds) and 200 (23.6 seconds) to pace Johnsburg.

Grayslake North was led by the 4x100 relay team’s second-place finish (49.54 seconds).

Richmond-Burton Triangular: Richmond-Burton won the meet with 83 points beating out fellow Big Northern Conference teams Burlington Central (75) and North Boone (28).

R-B’s Matt Lytle (4:53.2) and Rocco Mazzanti (5:00.7) took the top two spots in the 1,600.

TENNIS

CL Central 5, Woodstock 2: At Woodstock, Tommy Nelson (No. 1 singles) and Tyler George (No. 2 singles) each won their matches and led the Tigers to an FVC victory against the Blue Streaks (4-6, 1-4).

Luke Kunzie and Ryan Miller won their match at No. 1 doubles to lead Woodstock.

Johnsburg 5, Wauconda 2: At Johnsburg, Dan Martin won his match at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and the Skyhawks defeated the Bulldogs in non-conference action.

Grant 4, Marengo 1: At Marengo, Marengo’s Chris Wilwers won the No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-3, for the Indians (0-12) in a non-conference loss to Grant.
