


Inside Prep trackAthlete of the week Boys Marshall Happ Woodstock, Senior Happ won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs at the McHenry County Track and Field Meet last Friday. In the 800, Happ came from behind in the final 100 meters to pass Crystal Lake South’s Steven Rogers and win in 1:58.11. Rogers was second in 1:58.30. Happ then came back in the 1,600 and broke away from the pack in the third lap. He won in 4:26.38, ahead of McHenry’s Jeff Sabatka (4:28.87) in second place. Happ finished 11th in the Class AA 1,600 at the IHSA Class AA Boys Track and Field State Meet last year. Happ also anchored the Blue Streaks’ 4x800 relay, with Derek Busch, Jacob Bourassa and Dan Howe, as that quartet ran a school-record 8:11.9 in a meet Monday. Girls Amy Fanella Huntley, Junior Fanella won the 300-meter low hurdles at the McHenry County Track and Field Meet in 45.40 seconds, a meet record. Fanella had said earlier in the week she wanted to break the meet record of Crystal Lake South’s Kellie Schuh (45.57), and she did it. Fanella also won the triple jump in Thursday’s field event competition and anchored the Red Raiders’ winning 4x400 relay team with Marilyn McDougal, Abbey Shaw and Denita Brown. Fanella also took third place in the 100 high hurdles. Can’t-miss meets Boys Crystal Lake Central 5 p.m. today, at Owen Metcalf Field Huntley, Woodstock and the host Tigers are the local teams competing in the meet. GIRLS Fox Valley Conference Meet 4 p.m. Thursday, The Trojans won the McHenry County Meet by a slim margin, three-quarters of a point, over Huntley. Woodstock also was close, so it should be another close race for the team title. Big Northern 4 p.m. Thursday, Richmond-Burton’s Lindsey Wilkins, Hollis DuBois and Sarah Finley lead the way as the Rockets try to see how high they can finish as a team. – By Joe Stevenson jstevenson@nwherald.com |
