PR Maroon prevails
CARY – Prairie Ridge’s Craig Greenwald captured the No. 1 singles title Saturday at the Prairie Ridge Invitational to lead the Wolves’ Maroon team to a one-point victory against Crystal Lake Central. Greenwald, a senior, defeated Crystal Lake Central sophomore Tommy Nelson, 6-4, 6-4, in the championship match, and Prairie Ridge’s Maroon team edged Central for the team title, 28-27. The Wolves’ Silver team finished third with 25 points in the invitational, which was played at Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge. Greenwald played three matches Saturday after a late night out Friday. “I had to play from this morning until just now after having prom last night,” he said. “It was rough.” After winning the first set, Greenwald led, 5-2, in the second set and looked ready to take the match. However, Nelson broke Greenwald’s serve to make it 5-3, and then closed to 5-4 after winning a long rally in the next game. However, Nelson could not sustain the momentum, and a drop shot by Greenwald on his second match point gave him the championship. The pair joked about how Nelson won the previous match between the two. “Last week, we were tied and it was about to rain,” Greenwald said. “So we played rock, paper, scissors – and he won.” Crystal Lake Central freshman Tyler George won the No. 2 singles title match against Johnsburg’s Brayton Regner, 6-4, 6-4. In doubles action, Prairie Ridge Maroon’s Mitch MacArthur and Matt Miller won the No. 1 doubles championship match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, against Prairie Ridge Silver’s Quinn Revak and Brandon Curtis. Prairie Ridge Silver’s Alex Trinen and John Andres defeated Crystal Lake Central’s Charlie Weller and Chris Chmielewski in the No. 2 doubles championship match, 6-4, 6-4. Johnsburg finished fourth with 23 points, and Marengo finished eighth with eight points. |
