Vazquez powers South baseball team past D-C

CARPENTERSVILLE – James Vasquez had a good day at the plate for the Crystal Lake South baseball team Thursday in their 12-4 win against Dundee-Crown in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game.

Vasquez, a senior second baseman, went 2-for-2 with a home run, four RBIs, three runs scored, and a stolen base for the Gators (14-9 overall, 2-3 FVC Valley) .

“He was on base all day,” South coach Brian Bogda said. “James took what they gave him and made the most of it.”

Ian Gardeck (5-0) got the win for South as he struck out six batters in six innings.

“This was by far [Gardeck’s] best outing and he is learning how to be a complete pitcher,” Bogda said.

D-C junior third baseman Chris Sailor went 1-for-2 and drove in two runs for the Chargers (1-4, 4-16) in the loss.

Huntley 6, Grayslake Central 1: At Huntley, Craig Lipp threw a complete game, striking out six as Huntley won the FVC Fox Division game.

Chris Klein doubled and had two RBIs for the Red Raiders (19-3-1, 5-0). Matt Schmidt had the lone RBI for the Rams (14-10, 2-4).

Prairie Ridge 6, CL Central 2: At Crystal Lake, Logan Olson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Wolves (20-5, 6-0 FVC Fox) in a conference win against the Tigers (10-11, 1-4).

Central senior second baseman Jake Heckman was 1-for-1 and scored a run in the losing effort.

Grayslake North 6, McHenry 1: At Grayslake, Ed Tatera struck out four while throwing a complete game as the Knights won the FVC crossover.

Vinnie Licciardello had three hits and two RBIs for North (6-16). Pat Murphy doubled for the Warriors (17-7).

Richmond-Burton 6, Marengo 5: At Richmond, Harrison Daniels went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Rockets (7-15, 4-4 BNC East) as R-B beat the Indians (2-18, 0-5) in BNC East play.

Marengo’s Jake Tucker was 2-for-3 with two doubles in the loss.

Harvard 8, Hampshire 1: At Harvard, Chase Blazier struck out 13 while giving up four hits as Harvard won the BNC East game.

Blazier added a double and three RBIs for the Hornets (14-8, 5-2 BNC East). Tyler Bentley had a double and an RBI for the Whip-Purs (15-9, 5-3).

Alden-Hebron 15, Berean Baptist 9: At Hebron, Alden-Hebron sophomore Mitch Hooper went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for the Giants (16-3, 11-0 Indian Trails Conference).

TENNIS

CL South 6, Cary-Grove 1: At Crystal Lake, Jared Favaro and Alec Shimon won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, as the Gators (12-1, 9-0) won the FVC Valley match.

Chris Federighi won at No. 1 singles for the Trojans’ lone win.

Prairie Ridge 5, CL Central 2: At Crystal Lake, Craig Greenwald won at No. 1 singles to lead the Wolves to the FVC Fox win.

Tyler George won at No. 2 singles for the Tigers.

Johnsburg 4, Grayslake Central 3: At Grayslake, Johnsburg’s Jon Frantz and Chris Goulet won their No. 1 doubles match 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 as the Skyhawks (11-3, 6-3 FVC) beat the Rams in conference play. Grayslake sophomore Mitch Granger won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2.

Dundee-Crown 4, Huntley 3: At Huntley, Roger Bravo won at No. 1 singles as the Chargers (3-11, 1-8) got their first FVC win of the season.

Jake Fontana won at No. 3 singles for the Red Raiders (4-10, 1-9).

Woodstock 5, Grayslake North 2: At Woodstock, Ryan Miller and Luke Kunzie won at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 6-1, for the Blue Streaks (7-8, 3-7 FVC). North’s Nate Campanile won the No. 1 singles match, 6-2, 6-1.

TRACK AND FIELD

Ed Reeves Invitational: At Marengo, Steve Seydel won the 200 meters (22.93 seconds) and 400 meters (50.24) for Johnsburg to lead the Skyhawks (59 points) to a fifth-place finish in the 10-team event.

Belvidere North (165) won the event. Richmond-Burton (86) was second behind Kyle Wismer’s victory in the long jump (20 feet, 7 3/4 inches).

Harvard (64) was third, and Woodstock (62) was fourth. Marshall Happ won the 800 meters (1:58.36) and 1,600 meters (4:25.24) for the Blue Streaks. Marengo (49) was sixth and Alden-Hebron (19) finished ninth.
