Boys Athlete
of the Week

Zach Siegmeier

Crystal Lake Central, Senior

Siegmeier notched a personal best with a 15-foot effort in the pole vault Monday at a triangular meet at Crystal Lake South.

Siegmeier’s previous best was 14-6. He was the pole vault champion at the McHenry County Track and Field Meet at 14-3.

Siegmeier placed second in the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic in March, vaulting 14-6.

Girls Athlete
of the Week

Marianne Collard

Crystal Lake South, Sophomore

Collard won the 800- and 1,600-
meter runs Thursday at the Fox Valley Conference Track and Field Meet at Cary-Grove’s Al Bohrer Field.

Collard won the 800 in 2:20.21, then came back and won the 1,600 in 5:08.30, which broke the meet record set by Crystal Lake Central’s Haley Staples in 2006 (5:08.81). Collard edged Woodstock sophomore Kayla Beattie in a photo finish for that victory. Beattie was timed at 5:08.32.

Hillstriders winners announced: The winners of the Hillstriders Distance Running Scholarship, established in 2002 in memory of past president Fritz Kauffman, were announced Thursday at the FVC Girls Track and Field Meet.

Cary-Grove’s Molly MacInnes, Marengo’s Scott Meyers and Marengo’s Sarah Sprague each will receive $2,000 from the Hillstriders. The scholarships are not awarded on running ability or academic rank, but through essays composed by applicants on how running has changed their lives.

Scholarships are funded through proceeds generated by the Hillstriders March Madness Half Marathon. In the eight years since the scholarships’ inception, $36,000 has been awarded to runners from 12 of the 14 high schools in McHenry County. C-G runners have received eight of the scholarships, and Marengo runners have received six.

Last chance: Huntley senior Cortney Wilkerson has been one of the area’s top discus throwers the past three seasons, but has something missing on her résumé: a state berth.

Wilkerson won the discus Thursday at the FVC Meet with a throw of 119-10.

“I haven’t been to state since junior high,” Wilkerson said. “I was going for a distance over state-qualifying [117-6]. I had another good one that landed out of the sector. This week I’ve hit state-qualifying three times.”

Wilkerson threw that distance twice in a triangular meet Monday at Huntley’s track. She will have the benefit of throwing in her home ring again Friday at the IHSA Class 3A Huntley Sectional.

“I definitely feel good about having the sectional at home,” she said.
