Big inning carries C-G softball team

CARY – Cary-Grove’s softball team scored all of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Friday and hung on for a 5-4 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win against Jacobs.

Lindsey Marshall (6-7) pitched six strong innings, limiting the Golden Eagles to five hits and three runs. Alexis Haley (1-for-3, double, RBI) and Emma Gaulke (1-for-3, run) led the Trojans (12-12 overall, 5-4 FVC Valley) at the plate.

Marissa Lombardo struck out four in six innings in taking the loss. Sarah Jacobson (2-for-4, double, triple, run scored) and Kelsey Peterson (2-for-3, double) led the Golden Eagles (12-10, 6-3).

Grayslake Central 2, Dundee-Crown 1 (9 inn.): At Grayslake, Monika Wedick struck out 10 and pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Rams (6-16) against the Chargers (4-14) in FVC crossover action. Shannon Sarillo drove in the winning run for Central on a fielder’s choice. Emilie Kerkman struck out nine in a losing effort for D-C.

Grayslake North 10, Woodstock 2: At Grayslake, Kristina Gandy struck out seven, and Carly Borders and Mindy Runge each hit homers for the Knights (6-16) in their FVC crossover win against the Blue Streaks (8-16).

Harvard 10, North Boone 5, At Poplar Grove, Kristen Weidner (2-for-4, three runs, RBI), Lindsay Melson (3-for-4, two RBIs), and Alyssa Stephens (3-for-4, two runs, double, two RBIs) led the Hornets (6-12, 4-4) in their Big Northern Conference East Division win. Lindsay Melson (6-7) struck out 13 to earn the win.

Wauconda 7, Marengo 2: At Wauconda, Lauren Roudabush went 3-for-4, and Amanda Knutson went 2-for-4 for the Indians (19-2) in their non-conference loss.

BASEBALL

CL South 5, Jacobs 1: At Algonquin, Ian Gardeck hit a two-run homer in the third inning to lead the Gators to the FVC Valley win.

Easton Kowalski threw a complete game, striking out seven for South (15-9, 3-3). Patton Hofer had the lone RBI for the Golden Eagles (10-16, 2-4).

Cary-Grove 7, Dundee-Crown 5: At Carpentersville, Corey Bruns earned the win for the Trojans (18-6, 4-1) in their FVC Valley victory.

Willy Larsen (2-for-4, RBI) and Brendon Schumacher (2-for-3, RBI) led the Chargers (4-17, 1-5).

CL Central 12, Johnsburg 0 (5 inn.): At Crystal Lake, Lee Spinelle (2-for-2, two doubles, three RBIs) and Steven Dominici (2-for-2, two runs, two RBIs) led the Tigers in their FVC Fox win against the Skyhawks (6-16, 1-5). Jerad Grundy had the lone hit for Johnsburg.

Harvard 9, North Boone 3: At Harvard, Colin Carpenter (2-for-4, run scored two RBIs) led the Hornets (15-8, 6-2) in their Big Northern Conference East Division win against the Vikings. Cody Melson (3-3) pitched a complete game to earn the win.

Hampshire 11, Winnebago 1
(5 inn.): At Hampshire, Tyler Bentley (2-for-2, two doubles, RBI) and Bo Price (3-for-4, three RBIs) led the Whip-Purs (15-10) in their non-conference win.

GIRLS SOCCER

McHenry 2, Jacobs 1: At Algonquin, Molly Machometa scored twice to lead the Warriors (9-9, 3-6) in their FVC Valley win against the Golden Eagles. Emily Preis scored for Jacobs (8-10-2, 4-4).

Burlington Central Tournament: Katie Ruben scored a goal and assisted on another goal, and Woodstock (10-10) started tournament play with a 3-0 win against Burlington Central.

Hampshire beat Streamwood, 1-0, to open the tournament. Alex
Heinrich scored for the Whip-Purs (9-2-2).

Marian Central 0, Lakes 0: At Woodstock, Maureen Foley recorded 10 saves for Marian (13-3-1) in a non-conference tie with the Eagles.

BOYS TENNIS

Prairie Ridge 5, CL South 2: At Crystal Lake, Craig Greenwald won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4, and Alex Trinen and John Andress won at No. 4 doubles to lead the Wolves in their FVC win against the Gators.

Jared Favaro (No. 1 singles) and the team of Ryan Kinross and Dan Trebac (No. 3 doubles) posted wins for South.
