Conway provides relief for McHenry

McHENRY – The key moment of a comeback win is not necessarily when the game-winning hit occurs.

McHenry’s Josh Conway (2-1) had one of those moments Saturday.

Woodstock had runners on second and third base with one out in the third inning when Conway came in and struck out the next two batters to prevent Woodstock from building on its three-run lead.

McHenry came back with four runs in the seventh to earn a 5-4 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division victory.

Conway pitched 42⁄3 scoreless innings to earn the win.

“Josh did a great job in relief,” McHenry coach Brian Rockweiler said. “Those two strikeouts in the third kept us in the game.”

Leading the way for the Warriors (18-7 overall, 5-1 FVC Valley) were Colin Hansen, who went 3-for-4, Cody Richter, who was 2-for-3, with an RBI, and Pat Murphy, who drove in the game-winning run with his only hit of the game.

Woodstock (12-13, 3-6) was led by Ethan Beckman, who had a home run and three RBIs, and Garrett Gee, who went 2-for-3. Gee also took the loss.

Cary-Grove 5, Dundee-Crown 1: At Cary, Sean Kaveney struck one and pitched five shutout innings for the Trojans (19-6-1, 6-1) in an FVC Valley win against the Chargers (4-16, 1-6). Kegan Mascarella was 2-for-3 with a double, and Matt Nelsen had an RBI for C-G.

Johnsburg’s Josh Galvin drove in two runs.
