Simons perfect with 49 pitches

MARENGO – Marengo’s softball team made it to last season’s IHSA Class 3A state tournament behind great pitching.

Danielle Simons has carried on that tradition this season, and she improved to 14-0 on Tuesday with a five-inning perfect game against Hampshire in a 13-0 Big Northern Conference East Division win.

“She pitched really well, hit her spots real well, and our defense was good behind her, and if you do that, you will have a lot of success,” Marengo coach Dwain Nance said.

Simons struck out three in throwing only 49 pitches.

The Indians (23-4 overall, 7-1 BNC East) scored twice in the second inning before exploding for 11 runs in the fourth.

Amanda Knutson and Alysa Grude each had three RBIs for Marengo, and Jessie Grude had three hits and knocked in two runs.

Ally Kent took the loss for the Whip-Purs (10-14, 2-4).

Richmond-Burton 11, North Boone 1 (5 inn.): At Richmond, Miranda Burns’ grand slam was the big blow in a nine-run fourth inning for the Rockets (5-18-1, 2-7) in a BNC East victory. Lauren Richert and Bree Roberts added two RBIs each. Jessica Kerns allowed one hit in five innings to earn the win.

Burlington Central 15, Harvard 0 (5 inn.): At Harvard, Kristen Weidner took the loss and had a hit for the Hornets (6-14, 4-5) in their BNC East loss.

Woodstock 7, Dundee-Crown 1: At Woodstock, Nikki Greenhill (4-5) struck out nine in seven innings for the Blue Streaks (9-17, 5-5) in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win against the Chargers (4-16, 0-10). D-C senior pitcher Emily Kerkman struck out three.

Huntley 7, Grayslake North 2: At Grayslake, Sarah Clancy hit a grand slam during a seven-run third inning, and the Red Raiders won the FVC Fox Division game.

Deana DeBosschere tripled and had a RBI for Huntley (18-10, 8-3). Mindy Runge hit a home run for the Knights (7-17, 3-8).

Jacobs 5, Johnsburg 0: At Johnsburg, Sarah Jacobson went 3-for-4 with a double for the Golden Eagles (14-10) in an FVC crossover win against the Skyhawks (12-13). Amanda Daly took the loss despite striking out 12 in seven innings.

Indian Trails Conference Tournament: Alden-Hebron (11-9, 5-1) won the tournament with a pair of wins. The Giants beat Christian Liberty, 17-1, and Faith Christian, 11-4. Hayli Lagerhausen (11-9) pitched two complete games and struck out 17 batters.

Huntley 7, Johnsburg 0: At Huntley, Aimee Wronski scored twice as the Red Raiders won the FVC Fox match against the Skyhawks (1-14-1, 1-9) and completed a perfect conference season.

Kelly Creager added two second-half goals for Huntley (21-1-1, 10-0).

CL Central 5, Grayslake North 0: At Grayslake, Lili Ruiz and Sam Johnson each scored twice for the Tigers (8-6, 6-4), who won an FVC Fox match against the Knights (7-11, 3-6). Nelle Youel had four assists for Central.

Richmond-Burton 5, Marengo 1: At Marengo, Hailey Schleibinger scored twice for the Rockets, who won the BNC East match.

Savannah Schinto and Brittany Bogart each had a goal and an assist for R-B (14-2-2, 7-2). Jenna Overlee scored the only goal for the Indians (7-8-1, 2-5-1).

Jacobs 1, Dundee-Crown 0: At Carpentersville, KC Roller scored on a penalty kick to give the Golden Eagles the FVC win.

Alyssa Barnard made four saves for Jacobs (9-10-2, 5-5).

Dee Libricz made six saves for the Chargers (4-16, 2-9).

Hampshire 7, Burlington Central 0: At Hampshire, Christine Schumacher scored three times to help the Whip-Purs win the BNC East match.

Kelly Plichta added three assists for Hampshire (11-3-3, 9-0).
