Warriors upset Hononegah

MACHENSEY PARK – The McHenry girls soccer team didn’t look like a lowly No. 4 seed Tuesday.

The Warriors upset top-seeded Hononegah, 3-2, in the IHSA Class 3A Harlem Regional semifinals.

“It was a good game, and the girls came out strong,” McHenry coach Jim Nelson said. “We played our kind of soccer.”

McHenry freshman midfielder Molly Machometa scored twice, and sophomore Mariah Garcia scored the game-winning goal for the Warriors
(11-10) in the second half.

Woodstock (12-10-1) also won its match in the Harlem Regional. The third-seeded Blue Streaks beat second-seeded Harlem, 3-2.

Jaid Ritter scored a pair of goals for the Blue Streaks, who will face McHenry in the regional final at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Barrington Regional: Dundee-Crown (4-17) was shut out by Lake Zurich, 6-0, in a semifinal.

Class 2A Marian Central Regional: At Woodstock, Hannah Condit scored a goal for second-seeded Richmond-Burton (15-4-2) in a 2-1 loss to third-seeded Wauconda in double overtime.

Class 2A Lakes Regional: At Lake Villa, Kim Shurtliff and Alyssa Smith both scored for fourth-seeded Grayslake North, which lost in double overtime to top-seeded Lakes, 3-2.

SFlbSOFTBALL

Marengo 12, Johnsburg 0 (6 inn.): At Johnsburg, Danielle Simons (16-0) pitched a six-inning perfect game and struck out eight for the Indians (25-4) in a non-conference win against the Skyhawks (13-16).

Amanda Daly struck out four in three innings in taking the loss.

Huntley 16, Grayslake Central 1 (5 inn.): At Grays-lake, Sam Clemons went 2-for-4 and had three RBIs for the Red Raiders (20-10 overall, 10-3 Fox Valley Conference Fox Division) in a win against the Rams (8-19, 4-9). Claire Brennan went 1-for-3 for Grayslake Central.

CL Central 4, Dundee-Crown 0: At Carpentersville, Jackie Kisman pitched a three-hit shutout for the Tigers (6-17) in an FVC crossover win against the Chargers (4-22). Despite picking up the loss, D-C’s Emilie Kerkman struck out seven in seven innings.

McHenry 3, CL South 0: At Crystal Lake, McHenry’s Sarah Boyer (15-4) struck out 14 in seven innings, and the Warriors (22-7, 9-3) beat the Gators (19-8, 7-5) in FVC Valley play. Emily Mahoney picked up the loss for South despite striking out six in seven innings.

Burlington Central Catholic 4, Marian Central 2: At Burlington, Wis., Bizzy Levy went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Hurricanes (8-14) in a non-conference loss.

BASEBALL

Cary-Grove 12, Jacobs 0 (5 inn.): At Algonquin, Corey Bruns (8-3) pitched a five-inning no-hitter and struck out nine as the Trojans (25-7-1, 11-2) clinched their second consecutive FVC Valley Division title. Henry Gigeous (0-1) struck out three in three innings for the Golden Eagles (13-20, 5-8).

CL South 14, McHenry 2: At McHenry, David Loupee went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for the Gators (20-10, 8-5) in an FVC Valley victory against the Warriors (20-12, 7-6). McHenry’s Nick Brennan had an RBI.

Prairie Ridge 10, Johnsburg 7: At Crystal Lake, Kyle Kaczmarski went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs for the Wolves (27-6, 12-1) in an FVC Fox win against the Skyhawks (6-22, 1-11). Johnsburg’s Jerad Grundy homered.

Woodstock 11, Dundee-Crown 5: At Carpentersville, D-C’s Willy Larsen homered and drove in a two runs for the Chargers (6-21, 3-10) in an FVC Valley loss to the Blue Streaks (15-16, 6-9).

BOYS TENNIS

Spirit of the Northwest Tournament: At Huntley, Johnsburg (13-3) swept all five brackets of the tournament. Johnsburg’s Brayton Regner won the No. 1 singles title match against Marengo’s Chris Wilwers, 6-0, 6-0. Huntley took third behind Cameron Marzejon and Mike Kamper, who finished third in
No. 2 doubles.
