Local girls miss state track finals

Alden-Hebron senior Tina Finley competed in the Class 1A 100- and 200-meter dashes Thursday at the IHSA Girls Track and Field State Meet in Charleston.

Finley did not qualify for the finals in either of her events. She was the first A-H girls athlete to make it to Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium and the state meet in four years.

“I felt good about the 100, but not so much about the 200,” Finley said. “I’m very happy [being here].”

Finley had an anxious moment in the 100 when, just after the starting gun fired, it was fired again. It turned out there was no false start, but one girl had stumbled in her blocks, so the starter ordered a restart.

“No one else stopped at first,” Finley said. “I’d gone about 30 meters and I was the first, then I thought I’d blown my chance. Some of the girls ran almost 70 meters before they stopped.”

Finley ran a time of 13.41 seconds in the 100 for fifth place in her nine-person heat. She ran 27.86 in the 200 for sixth in her heat.

Harvard’s Emily Scott was the only other area competitor Thursday and threw 32 feet, 11⁄4 inches in the shot put, which did not qualify for the finals.

The Class 2A and 3A preliminary heats and flights take place today, with finals in all three classes Saturday.
