Harvard’s Kramer wins 200 prelim heat at stateHarvard’s Cody Kramer left nothing to chance Thursday at the IHSA Boys Track and Field State Meet. The Hornets’ junior won his preliminary heat in 22.62 seconds in the Class 1A 200-meter dash to qualify for Saturday’s finals at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium. Harvard’s Miguel Flores qualified in the discus in more dramatic fashion than Kramer. Flores threw 150 feet, 6 inches on his final attempt and goes into Saturday’s 12-competitor finals in ninth place. “I liked the crowd and all the people that were there,” Kramer said. “I was pretty excited about being on a college field and being able to do that. I got a little adrenaline going before the race. After that, I was pretty happy with what happened.” Flores needed a big throw on his final attempt to make the finals and came through with his best effort of the season. “During warmups, I was feeling pretty good, but I scratched on my first one and my second throw wasn’t very good,” Flores said. “I did everything right on the third one and got one out there. Everything felt good.” Flores said he wanted to watch some of the Class 3A throwers today, particularly Lake Park’s Dan Block, who threw 208 feet in last week’s Lake Park Sectional. Huntley’s Marcus Popenfoose is the second-seeded discus thrower out of sectional meets. BASEBALL Class 3A Richmond-Burton Regional: Marian Central’s David Luczak fired a one-hitter and struck out 13 as the top-seeded Hurricanes (20-9) defeated No. 4 R-B, 2-0, in their semifinal game. Luczak allowed only a second-inning triple to the Rockets’ Harrison Daniels. He walked two and allowed only four runners to reach base. R-B freshman Ray Wojciechowski allowed four hits and one earned run. Marian scored twice in the sixth inning. Scott Franzegrote singled and advanced on an error. Andy Stochl then reached on an error, which scored Franzegrote. Jack Kosar doubled in Stochl for the second run. Marian meets the winner of today’s semifinal between No. 2 Johnsburg and No. 3 Antioch at 11 a.m. Saturday in the championship game. Class 3A Wheaton Academy Regional: At Wheaton, Nick Knoeppel scored twice and knocked in three runs as third-seeded Crystal Lake Central defeated No. 2 seed Wheaton Academy, 5-2. Jake Heckmon had three hits and an RBI for the Tigers (17-16), who will play Glenbard South at 3 p.m. Saturday in a rematch of last year’s Schaumburg Supersectional game. Class 3A Wauconda Regional: Ryan Gutierrez and Matt Bergstrom each had two-run singles in the sixth inning to give fourth-seeded Grayslake North a 5-3 win against top-seeded Lakes to advance to Saturday’s championship game. Nate Sousa threw a complete game for the Knights (11-23). SOFTBALL Class 2A Byron Sectional: Jordan Kasbohm threw a no-hitter as West Carroll shut out Harvard, 5-0, in the sectional semifinal. Kasbohm had a perfect game through six innings before Sam Hereley led off with the seventh with a bunt that was ruled an error. Hornets coach John Lagerhausen said that Hereley reached first before the throw arrived and should have been given a hit. Lindsey Melson struck out eight in the loss for the Hornets (8-16). Class 4A Guilford Regional: Taylor Schulty struck out 13 for Woodstock in a 1-0 loss to DeKalb in a semifinal game. Brittany Heide hit a triple to drive in a run for DeKalb. Marengo 6, Lakes 0: At Marengo, Kaleigh Velasquez had two doubles, a triple and four RBIs as the Indians won the non-conference game. Danielle Simons struck out nine in getting the win for Marengo (28-6). • Andy Schmidt and Joe Stevenson contributed to this report. |
