J’burg earns shot at regional baseball title

RICHMOND – Johnsburg’s baseball team overcame five errors, including four in Antioch’s two-run fifth inning, and the second-seeded Skyhawks defeated the third-seeded Sequoits, 5-4, in an IHSA Class 3A Richmond-Burton Regional semifinal Friday.

Josh Galvin earned the victory, allowing three hits and four runs (two earned) in 52⁄3 innings. Galvin also had a triple and two RBIs.

Adding to the offense for Johnsburg (7-24) were Jerad Grundy, who was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Bob Hutchinson, also 2-for-3.

Grundy pitched 11⁄3 innings to earn a save.

Johnsburg faces top-seeded Marian Central in the regional final at 11 a.m. today. The game will be a rematch of last year’s regional final, won by Marian.

Class 3A Wauconda Regional: Second-seeded Grayslake Central defeated third-seeded Wauconda, 4-2.

The Rams (20-14) will face fourth-seeded Grayslake North at 1:30 p.m. today in the regional final.

BOYS TENNIS

IHSA State Finals: At Buffalo Grove, Prairie Ridge senior Craig Greenwald lost his fourth-round match in the consolation singles bracket to Belleville West’s Max McLean, 6-1, 6-4. Greenwald finished with a 2-2 record at the tournament.

In the championship bracket singles competition today at Hersey, Michael Moore (Glenbrook South) will face Denis Bogatov (Gurnee Warren), and Michael Redlicki (Lake Zurich) will play Blake Bazarnik (Stevenson) in the semifinals.

The doubles semifinal matchups are Dan Ballantine and Ian Tesmond (Hinsdale Central) against John Beam and Brantner Jones (New Trier) and Tommy McNichols and Michael Sellitto (Glenbrook South) against Ross Putterman and David Packowitz (Stevenson).

Stevenson, Hinsdale Central and New Trier are tied atop the team leaderboard with 36 points.
