Krystal focused on team chemistryIt’s not uncommon for teams to sit down during the preseason and outline what they would like to accomplish. But instead of brainstorming traditional goals – winning the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division, winning a regional title or going undefeated – Cary-Grove soccer coach Ray Krystal’s group focused more on team chemistry. “At one point, I thought that I needed to go back and read some Social Studies books,” Krystal said, “because everything these girls were suggesting – believing in themselves, supporting one another, preparing for games, welcoming in the younger players – were steps toward building a culture and the kind of environment they wanted their team to play in.” For leading his team to a stellar season and for continuing to build a program that focuses on teamwork and hard work above wins and losses, Krystal is the Northwest Herald Girls Soccer Coach of the Year, as selected by the sports staff with input from local coaches. The Trojans this season did accomplish what many teams probably pinpointed as goals. C-G won the FVC Valley with an undefeated 10-0 mark, and, although they bowed out to Huntley in a Class 3A Regional final, the team suffered only three losses and shutout 12 of its 18 opponents. But it was the desire to better the program, and better themselves, that impressed Krystal most and that team-first mentality, his players say, came largely from the coach who piloted them. “In our [season-opener] against Barrington, we lost, but he didn’t care about what the scoreboard said,” goalkeeper Alex Holland said. “He was encouraged by how well we played together and how well we performed against them. ... He taught us that we can improve our team without a soccer ball.” It’s not easy to coach against Krystal, either, Crystal Lake South coach Brian Allen said. “You know you have your work cut out for you. His midfield is generally overwhelming and ... if you’re not prepared, you can be down, 3-0, before you even know what hit you. His teams are organized ... and they play very disciplined soccer.” |
