CRYSTAL LAKE – Katlyn Anderberg has had success this summer on the links, winning several events against some tough competition on the best courses the area has to offer.

At the Illinois Junior Golf Association regional tournament Monday at Prairie Isle, Anderberg had to overcome another obstacle: A second-degree sunburn on her left shoulder.

“This morning, I seriously considered not playing because I was in so much pain,” said Anderberg, who will be a senior this fall at Huntley. “I said to myself, ‘you’re not a quitter,’ and that I could get through it.”

Anderberg not only got through the event, she won the senior girls division by shooting an 11-over-par 83, beating her closest competitor, Casey Hahn of Barrington, by three strokes. The event’s senior divisions for boys and girls were for golfers 16 to 18 years old, and the junior divisions are for those 14 to 15.

“ I was getting out of the box well and made some good iron shots, and fortunately everything worked out,” Anderberg said.

Monday’s win was Anderberg’s first IJGA win of the summer. She is in 11th place in the IJGA Player of the Year standings.

On the boys side, Glenbrook South’s Steven Petchenik shot a 1-over 73 to win the senior boys regional title. Petchenik was first out of a field of 41.

“I came out trying to play as aggressive as possible and make as many birdies as possible,” Petchenik said.

Petchenik finished three shots ahead of five other golfers who shot three-over 76s and tied for second place, including Matt Efflandt and Ryan Laughlin of Cary-Grove.

“ I was able to play consistent overall, but missed a couple of chances to drop some birdie putts,” Efflandt said, who parred 16 of the 18 holes at Prairie Isle.

Nick Reuter, a Crystal Lake South graduate, also was among the five golfers tied for second.

“It means a lot to me to play well in a regional and this is the first time I had shot under par for nine holes,” Reuter said about his one-under 35 on the front nine.

Greg Conrad of Barrington shot a three-over 75 to win the junior boys event, while Sheinnera Gerongay was the only competitor in the junior girls event; she shot 100.
