Popenfoose kicks off Prep Challenge

Most sports fans have been watching a game and thought, “Well, geez, I could make that play.”

But how would a regular person actually fare in competition with some of the McHenry County area’s best high school athletes?

In the 2009 edition of the Summer Prep Challenge, I get my own personal answer to the question: not that well.

After last year, I’ve come to expect that. But the Prep Challenge is about more than putting me to shame (although that happens).

It’s also about getting to know some of the best prep athletes in the area and seeing just how good they really are at what they do.

In this week’s installment, Huntley shot putter and discus thrower Marcus Popenfoose gives me a clinic in putting the shot. He also talks about how he was converted from a runner when he was in junior high, and his plan to play fullback with the Huntley football team this fall.

Each week we’ll post new installments in the series on McHenryCounty
Sports.com, showcasing athletes from different schools in different sports.

I hope you enjoy them.
