Huntley, Marian vie for soccer title

WAUCONDA – The Wau­conda Soccer Invitational will have two McHenry County teams playing in its championship game Saturday as Huntley and Marian Central both won their semifinal matches Thursday.

Marian (8-0-0) remained undefeated on the season as it advanced to the tournament final with a convincing 3-0 win against Richmond-Burton in the semifinals. Tyler Lundquist, Ben Platta and Nolan Downes scored in the win for the Hurricanes.

“We have got off to a great start this season and the guys have come together and played well,” Marian coach Mike Golda said.

The Red Raiders (2-2-1) won their semifinal thanks to two first-half goals by Jave Diaz to beat host Wauconda, 2-0.

“We knew what we had to do to get in the final and after the first two goals, we sat in there and didn’t give them any space,” Huntley coach Kris Grabner said.

Huntley junior goalkeeper Kevin Montelongo made five saves in the shutout of the Bulldogs.

“It is going to be a challenge against Marian,” Grabner said. “If we come out and play like we did today we should have a shot.”

Lake Park Tournament: Goalkeeper Dave Walsh had seven saves in his third consecutive shutout for Crystal Lake South as the Gators (5-0-1) tied Wheaton North in tournament play. The Gators are 3-0-1 in the tournament.

Palatine Hogan Tournament: At Palatine, Prairie Ridge lost to Deerfield, 5-3, as the Wolves (2-2-0) fell behind, 4-0, at half. Mac Curtis, Alex Polizzi and Sam Poli scored for the Wolves in the tournament loss.

CL Central 5, Grayslake North 0: At Crystal Lake, Tyler Fehring had three goals to lead the Tigers (4-3-1, 1-1 FVC Fox) past Grayslake North 5-0 in an FVC Fox Division match-up. Sam Kruse added a goal and an a assist for Central.

Johnsburg 7, Woodstock North 0: At Woodstock, Johnsburg junior forward John Sanko scored twice for the Skyhawks (2-2-0, 2-0 FVC Fox) in an FVC Fox win against the Thunder(0-4-0, 0-2). Woodstock North goalkeeper Justin Kruczek had 25 saves.

Harvard 1, Byron 0: At Byron, Alberto Martinez scored the lone goal for the Hornets (3-1) in their BNC crossover win against the Tigers.

CL South 165, D-C 172: At Red Tail in Lakewood, Nick Robles took medalist honors with a 1-over-par 37 as the Gators (4-0, 4-0 FVC) beat the Chargers in FVC play. Alex Campe’s 41 was the low round for D-C.

Cary-Grove 150, Johnsburg 162: At Chapel Hill in McHenry, Ryan Laughlin shot even-par 35 to help the Trojans (4-0) defeat the Skyhawks (0-3). Eddie Ulreich added a 37 for Cary-Grove. Jake Arden carded a 39 to lead Johnsburg.

Prairie Ridge 158, Huntley 173: At Pinecrest in Huntley, Robinson Logue fired a 1-under-par 35 to lead the Wolves to a FVC victory against the Red Raiders. Greg Scime’s 40 was the low round for Huntley in the loss.

Byron 173, Hampshire 177: At Oak Club in Genoa, Hampshire lost its first match of the season as Jeremy Yoder’s 6-over-par 42 was the low score for the Whip-Purs (3-1, 2-1 BNC) in a BNC loss to the Tigers.

Burlington Central 169, Richmond-Burton 205: At Nippersink in Genoa City, Wis., Eric Buckley shot a 12-over par 48 as the Rockets (0-3, 0-3) fell in BNC play.
