Beattie has another record runCRYSTAL LAKE – Woodstock junior Kayla Beattie turned in her second course-record run at Veteran Acres Park in five days, and this time she left satisfied with her performance. Beattie won the McHenry County Cross Country Meet on Tuesday in 19:22.3, a course-record time, but felt she could have run much better. She proved it Saturday by knocking almost 20 seconds off her time. Beattie, pushed hard all the way by Marengo freshman Katie Adams, finished in 19:03.7 to win the Crystal Lake South Invitational. “This was a good race,” Beattie said. “Coming into the race, [assistant] coach [Bill] Macaulay told everyone to embrace the competition. That helped a lot. Katie Adams really pushed me. I’m looking forward to running against her.” Rolling Meadows won the girls team title with 96 points, just ahead of South (106). Huntley (118) took third. In the boys race, Fremd won with 73 points, followed by Belvidere North (99), Cary-Grove (103) and Woodstock (113). Dundee-Crown (155) was fifth and ran without its top runner, Anthony Manfrin, who is nursing a sore calf. In Tuesday’s county meet, Adams was third behind Kayla and Elise Beattie, both of whom finished ahead of the course record (19:45.5) set by Wauconda’s Katie Ellis in 2004. It was Adams’ first varsity race. “That meet really gave her some confidence,” Marengo coach R.J. Meyer said. “That made a world of difference.” Adams stayed right behind Kayla Beattie most of the race and finished in 19:07.4. “That [county] was my first race and I didn’t know what to expect or how to react to certain things, like when people passed me,” Adams said. “I knew what the Beatties were like to run against and that helped me to run my race, too.” South was led by Marianne Collard (fourth), Kristina Aubert (eighth) and Nina Wajrowski (15th) to take second. Huntley packed Haley Loprieno, Sara Scarbro and Delanie Dineen together at 10th through 12th to take third place. C-G’s Phil Fairleigh (17:05.9) took third in the boys race, closely followed by Woodstock’s Phil Meyer (17:11.2). “I’m very happy with that,” Meyer said. “Our team’s coming along well after a strong summer of running and we want to keep building on that. We were trying to run a smooth first mile, get after it in the second and the third mile’s just guts.” |
