
Cary-Grove continues strong startCARY – The Cary-Grove volleyball team continued its strong start to the 2009 season with a decisive 25-22, 25-9 win against Harvard in non-conference play. “We have tried winning matches quicker,” Cary-Grove coach Patty Langanis said. “In game one, we didn’t respond well to Harvard’s challenge, but in the second game we had all our players firing and playing well.” The Trojans (8-1) were led by the combination of junior outside hitter Kelly Lamberti, who had 15 kills, and senior setter Abbey Heredia, with 22 assists. “Kelly [Lamberti] is one of the most impressive players to watch, and Abby [Heredia] really knows how to run this offense,” Langanis said. Senior Kayla Klinger added seven digs for C-G in the victory. Harvard dropped to 1-1 with the loss. Wauconda 2, Richmond-Burton 0: At Richmond, Tracy Holian led the Rockets with eight assists, Caitlin Richert added eight digs and Chloe Fiedler and Kim Russell each had four kills in a non-conference loss for the Rockets (4-3). Prairie Ridge 2, Woodstock 0: At Woodstock, Taylor Humm’s eight kills and eight digs led the Wolves (3-0, 1-0 Fox Valley Conference Fox Division) in their 25-17, 25-11, FVC Fox win against the Blue Streaks. Woodstock (2-5, 0-1) was led by Allison Wynn’s four kills and five digs. Grayslake North 2, Woodstock North 0: At Grayslake, Stephanie Reis led the Thunder (2-6, 0-1 FVC Fox) with four kills and four aces in their loss to the Knights (2-6, 1-0) in division play. Huntley 2, South Elgin 0: At Huntley, The Red Raiders (7-3) were led by Amanda Carroll’s 16 assists in their, 25-9, 25-22 nonconference win against the Thunder. Jacobs 2, Lincoln-Way East 1: At Frankfort, Alyssa Ehrhardt had nine kills as the Golden Eagles won the nonconference match 20-25, 26-24, 25-22. Mattie Stearns added 25 digs for Jacobs (2-6). Grant 2, Marengo 1: At Marengo, Morgan Bartlett had three kills and 16 digs for the Indians (0-3) in a 18-25, 25-15, 25-22 loss to the Bulldogs in nonconference play. TENNIS McHenry 4, Huntley 3: At Huntley, Emma Romme won at No. 1 singles in a Fox Valley Conference win for the Warriors (2-3, 1-3 FVC). Bri Roeser won at No. 3 singles for the Red Raiders (2-3, 1-3). Johnsburg 7, Woodstock 0: At Woodstock, Heather Matejka won at No. 1 singles and Sara Coughlin won at No. 2 singles in an FVC win for the Skyhawks (6-0, 4-0) against the Thunder (0-6, 0-4). CL South 7, Dundee-Crown 0: At Crystal Lake, Marisa Thome, Rachel Siemon and Rachel Boorom all won their singles matches for the Gators (6-0, 5-0 FVC) in an FVC win against the Chargers. Prairie Ridge 6, Cary-Grove 1: At Cary, Hannah Gummerson won at No. 1 singles to lead the Wolves (4-1, 4-0) in their FVC win against the Trojans (3-4, 1-3). Laura Sparks won at No. 3 singles for Cary-Grove. CL Central 6, Grayslake Central 1: At Crystal Lake, the Tigers’ three singles players only lost one game combined in the FVC Fox win. Nelle Youel won at No. 1 singles for Central (4-5, 3-2 FVC Fox). GOLF Prairie Ridge 194, Marian Central 200: At Prairie Isle in Prairie Grove, Allison Holly fired a 5-over-par 41 to earn medalist honors and lead the Wolves (6-0) to a non-conference win against the Hurricanes. Marian Central was led by Annie Fordonski’s 9-over 45. Stillman Valley 225, Richmond-Burton 234: At Nippersink in Genoa City, Wis., Lauren Smith shot 53 to lead the Rockets in a Big Northern Conference loss to the Cardinals. Genoa-Kingston 230, Harvard 238: At Oak Club in Genoa, Sam Hereley shot a 55 for the Hornets in a non-conference loss to the Cogs. CROSS COUNTRY McHenry Jamboree: At Township Park in McHenry, Cary-Grove’s Megan Cummings won the meet in 20:10, and her first-place finish led the Trojans to winning the invite with 31 overall points. Cummings finished second ahead of Crystal Lake Central sophomore Molly Flood, as the Tigers finished second with 59 points. Dundee-Crown edged out Jacobs by one point, 96-97, taking third place despite not having a runner finish in the top 10. Prairie Ridge (115), Woodstock North (248), and Prairie Ridge (432) rounded out the field. Grayslake North Meet: At Nippersink Forest Preserve in Round Lake, Kelly McNeely ran a time of 19:15 to win the meet and lead Johnsburg (65) to a third-place finish. Crystal Lake South (48) won the event and was led by Marianne Collard’s second-place time of 19:37. Huntley (53) finished in second as Haley Loprieno led the Red Raiders with a time of 19:47 and a third-place finish.
