McHENRY – Crystal Lake Central’s boys golf team came into the season with expectations of being one of the elite teams in the Fox Valley Conference.

The Tigers showed their dominance Wednesday against Johnsburg as Joe Kallenbach shot a 1-over-par 35 to lead Central to a 148-173 victory against the Skyhawks at Chapel Hill.

Kallenbach was one of five Central golfers who shot in the 30s, which included a 2-over 36 by Riley Bauman, who had shot a 4-under 32 to tie the school record for nine holes Tuesday. Caelan Murphy shot a 4-over 38, and JB Garoufalis and Dunton Gunter each carded 5-over 39 for Central (5-0, 5-0 FVC).

Central coach Mike Hermann said that with the players bouncing around the course, playing holes 10-15 followed by holes 1-3, he was pleased that his five players shot the way they did.

“The kids started the round with a par 3, and then had six par 4s followed by another par-3 and par 4 with a par of 34,” Hermann said. “You have to be pleased getting five kids to shoot in the 30s, especially on an away site [where] they have very limited familiarity with the course.”

Tyler Chambers shot an 8-over 42 to lead Johnsburg
(14-4, 0-4).

Skyhawks coach Brad Frey said that his team just didn’t have what it took Wednesday to defeat Central.

“Central’s always good, and they came out and shot 148. That’s the way you play the game,” Frey said. “We’ve played better, and we just didn’t have it. I was hoping Central would get a little overconfident with Bauman’s blazing 32 the other day, but he came back with a 36. They are a deep team but we‘re getting there.”

Frey added that after winning a regional last season, the expectation level has gone up for the program.

“We have raised expectations over the past few years with our success,” Frey said. “We shot the school record a couple weeks ago. You win both of the tournaments you’re in. We’re very good against teams that are similar to us. You would like to come out and play well against the Centrals, Prairie Ridges and the Carys of the world, and so far we haven’t and I know we can.”

Coaches from the teams did not want their players to speak to reporters after the match.
