Then again, most teams are not Cary-Grove. The Trojans (3-0) crushed Woodstock (1-2) in their third runaway game to start the season, but coach Bruce Kay and his players vowed to be better next week. C-G committed 19 penalties, which drew Kay’s attention from his team’s 60-point output Friday night in Fox Valley Conference crossover action. (Click here for video highlights.) “That’s way too many penalties,” Kay said. “We’ll have to take a look at the film and fix it and get better for next week.” If that happens, watch out. C-G has outscored its opponents by a combined margin of 147-6 this season, with Woodstock snapping the Trojans’ season-long shutout on defense. Trojans quarterback Tyler Krebs passed for 231 yards and five touchdowns, including two apiece to running back Alex Hembrey and wide receiver Chad McCarron. Hembrey also rushed six times for 88 yards and a touchdown to lead the Trojans. “The receivers were great out there,” Krebs said. “I’ll take the least amount of credit because the receivers were catching everything. [As far as] the line, that’s the best blocking I’ve had in two years. All around, it was a pretty good passing game.” Woodstock quarterback Logan Kunzie proved he could pass the ball as well against the staunch C-G defense. Kunzie hit receiver Scott Rausch on a fade route down the left sideline for a 77-yard touchdown. “What we talked about at halftime was going out there and making plays and playing to the best of your abilities,” Woodstock coach Steve Beard said. “I think there are some players on our team tonight that really did play to the best of their abilities. Cary-Grove has a lot of special kids on their team.” One of those kids is Hembrey, who set the tone with a 48-yard touchdown run 53 seconds into the game. He finished with 200 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns, but he echoed his coach’s emphasis on cutting down penalties after the game. “Sixty-to-six, it looks good on the scoreboard, but we had [19] penalties offenseively,” Hembrey said. “That’s just unacceptable. We’ve still got a lot to work on.” Woodstock also has plenty to work on, but Beard stayed optimistic after the game. “If we win out, we share the Fox Division championship,” Beard said. “That’s what were going to hang our hat on right now.” |
