Hampshire, CLC, C-G win volleyball tourneys

DeKALB – Hampshire’s girls volleyball team continued its winning ways Saturday by claiming the DeKalb Invitational title with a 4-0 record.

The Whip-Purs defeated East Aurora, 25-18, 25-5, Ottawa Marquette, 25-14, 25-15, McHenry, 25-11, 15-25, 25-17, and DeKalb, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22. The Whip-Purs (9-2) were led by Amy Wehrs’ 40 kills and Kara Wehrs’ 29 kills and 36 assists. Leighann Libby (41 assists) and Tia Incapreo (28 digs) aided in Hampsire’s tournament title.

McHenry (4-2), went 2-2 with wins against West Carroll, 25-15, 20-25, 25-20, and Zion-Benton, 25-20, 25-19. Besides the loss to Hampshire, the Warriors also lost to DeKalb, 25-13, 25-21. Danielle Tonyan had 33 kills and 33 digs, and Katie Niehoff had 81 assists to lead the Warriors to a third-place finish.

Prairie Ridge Tournament: At Crystal Lake, Cary-Grove defeated Barrington, 25-12, 25-9, Fenwick, 25-18, 25-20, Naperville Central, 25-23, 26-24, Prairie Ridge, 25-20, 27-25, and St. Charles East, 25-21, 25-22, to go 5-0 and win the tournament championship. Kelly Lamberti had 51 kills, and Abbie Heredia had 116 assists to lead the Trojans (11-1).

CL Central Tournament: The host Tigers won the tournament with a 5-0 record. They defeated Marengo, 25-15, 25-12, Richmond-Burton, 25-17, 25-18, and Woodstock, 25-12, 25-14, on Saturday. The Tigers (11-3) were led by Amelia Anderson’s 19 kills and Tracy Friel’s 57 assists. R-B (9-5) finished with a 4-1 record and took second place. Woodstock (5-8) finished in fourth with a 1-4 record. Marengo placed fifth and Woodstock North (1-13) placed sixth.

Bartlett Tournament: Alyssa Sarrazine led Dundee-Crown with 38 kills, and Lindsay Mosher added 71 assists to lead the Chargers (4-5) to a third-place finish, with a 3-2 record.

Yorkville Tournament: Harvard (5-3) went 3-1 on Saturday, losing to Plainfield North, 25-19, 26-24, in the championship match. The Hornets defeated Oswego, Sandwich, and Yorkville to reach the championship match. Harvard was led by Ashleigh Fisher, who had 36 kills, and Marc Nystrom, who had 51 digs.

TENNIS

Marian Central Quad: At Woodstock, Kacie Terranova (36 points) won the No. 1 singles title, and Pierce Bailey (35) won the No. 2 singles title to lead Marian Central to the tournament win with 132 points. Julia Frisbe and Megan Kraft won the No. 2 doubles title with 36 points to lead Woodstock (92) to a third-place finish. Lydia Jung placed second at No. 2 singles with 35 points to lead Huntley (62).

Dundee-Crown Invitational: At Carpentersville, McHenry went 2-1 on Saturday, defeating Schaumburg and Dundee-Crown before losing to Conant to place second in the team-dual format tournament. D-C defeated St. Edward in the first round before losing to McHenry and Elgin to place fourth. Jacobs lost to Conant, defeated Palatine, and lost to Schaumburg to finish in sixth place.

Buffalo Grove Invitational: Janine Laverdiere and Valerie Pierce placed fourth at No. 3 doubles to lead Cary-Grove to a seventh-place finish with 10 points. Buffalo Grove (45) won the event.

Fremd Invitational: At Palatine, Carolyn Huerth and Allison Murphy went 3-0 to win the No. 1 doubles championship and lead Prairie Ridge to a second-place finish with 40 points. Crystal Lake South (3) finished sixth and was led by Marisa Thome’s second-place finish at No. 1 singles. Stevenson won the eight-team event with 43 points.

GOLF

Stillman Valley Invitational: At Prairie View in Byron, Samantha Herley shot a 93 to lead Harvard (441), which finished in 10th place at the 13-team event. Hononegah (358) won the tournament.

CROSS COUNTRY

Peoria Woodruff Invitational: At Detweiler Park, Jacobs (644 points) was led by Susan Piotrowski’s time of 19:57 and her 89th-place finish as the Golden Eagles placed 25th in the 36-team event. Katie Gross’ time of 20:12 was good for 120th place and led Dundee-Crown (670) to 27th. Hinsdale Central won the event with 56 points.

SWIMMING

Highland Park Invitational: McHenry’s Courtney Matthys won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11. McHenry’s 200 medley relay took first with a team of 1:58, and the Warriors finished second overall with 260 points. Maine West won the meet with 264 points.

St. Viator Invitational: At Arlington Heights, Kristin Horney took third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58.61 seconds and second the 50 freestyle (26.49) to lead Jacobs.
