PR tops J’burg in volleyball to stay unbeaten in FVC Fox

CRYSTAL LAKE – The Prairie Ridge girls volleyball team survived a close first set, 25-21, then prevailed in the second set, 25-14, to beat the Johnsburg Skyhawks on Thursday and remain undefeated in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division.

The Wolves (13-5, 5-0) were led by Taylor Brauneis’ seven kills and six digs and Taylor Humm’s five kills, nine digs and two aces.

“We made some unforced errors in the first set, but we did a nice job of setting up our hitters in the second set,” Wolves coach Stefanie Otto said.

Johnsburg (7-6, 3-2) picked up 16 kills, 32 digs and 14 assists in the match.

“Johnsburg’s defense was great, but we came out and served pretty aggressively,” Otto said.

CL Central 2, Woodstock North 0: At Woodstock, the Tigers (15-3, 4-1) took a Fox Valley Fox win behind Courtney Kielbassa’s five kills and three service aces and Tara Weber’s six kills. Alyx Vogle had four digs for the Thunder (1-16, 0-5).

Huntley 2, Dundee-Crown 0: At Carpentersville, Amanda Carroll had 16 assists to help lead the Red Raiders (14-5, 2-2) to a 25-12, 25-10 victory against Dundee-Crown (4-8, 0-4) in FVC Valley play.

McHenry 2, Jacobs 0: At Algonquin, Katie Niehoff recorded 25 assists and Storm Melnick added 15 digs in an FVC Valley win for the Warriors (7-4, 2-2) against the Golden Eagles, 25-19, 27-25. Mattie Stearns had 19 digs and Alyssa Ehrhardt added 12 kills for Jacobs (4-13, 1-3).

Hampshire 2, Harvard 0: At Hampshire, Kara Wehrs had 13 kills and Amy Wehrs added 11 to lead the Whip-Purs (13-2, 3-0) past Harvard, 25-17, 25-21 in BNC East action. Hornets Libero Marcy Nystrom had 19 digs for Harvard (7-5, 1-2).

Wauconda 2, Woodstock 0: At Wauconda, the Blue Streaks fell to Wauconda, 25-12, 25-15, in a non-conference match. Woodstock (7-10) was led by Allison Wynn’s five kills and Katie Ruben’s four kills.

Burlington Central 2, Marengo 0: At Burlington, Allison Rogutich recorded eight assists and 10 blocks for the Indians (5-13, 0-3) in a BNC East loss to Rockets.

GOLF

Prairie Ridge 179, Larkin 234: At Prarie Isle Golf Club in Prairie Grove, Allison Holly shot under 40 for the first time this season, taking medalist honors with a 2-over-par 37. Robin Manarik shot a 45 and Katelyn Horgan added a 47 for the Wolves (11-2, 5-1).

Marian Central 170, St. Edward 186: At Boone Creek in Bull Valley, Annie Fordonski carded a 6-over 41 to earn medalist honors and lead the Hurricanes (6-2) against St. Edward.

Rockford Lutheran 208, Marengo 231: At Sinnissippi Golf Course in Rockford, Hayley Keil led all Indians golfers with a 49. Caitlin Mikosz shot a 60 and Eureeka Kosior added a 61.

Huntley 207, Sandwich 233, Plano 266: At Edgebrook Golf Club in Sandwich, Katlyn Anderberg took medalist honors for the Red Raiders with a seven-over 43 and Holly Dryden added a 52.

TENNIS

Woodstock 6, Grayslake North 1: At Grayslake, the Blue Streaks swept all four doubles matches from the Rams for the FVC win. The No. 1 doubles team of Rachel Bellevia and Adrienne Long won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

CL Central 7, Dundee-Crown 0: At Crystal Lake, the Tigers won all seven matches against Dundee-Crown and lost one game in singles play en route to an FVC win. Nelle Youel won at No. 1 singles for Central (8-5, 7-2), and Shana Osbourne and Shana Sigmund won at No. 1 doubles.

Prarie Ridge 7, Johnsburg 0: At Johnsburg, the Wolves shut out the Skyhawks in an FVC matchup behind No. 1 singles Hannah Gummerson’s 6-4, 6-3 straight-set win.

SWIMMING

DeKalb 96, Woodstock 72: At Woodstock, Haley Brasile won the 500-yard freestyle and placed second in the 50-yard freestyle as the Blue Streaks fell in a non-conference meet. Becca Ortmann placed second in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. Ortmann and Brasile combined with Meghan Jensen and Malia Haanio to take the 200 freestyle relay.

McHenry 109, CL Central 61: At McHenry, Tiffany McCoy won four events to lead the Warriors to an FVC win, taking the 50-yard freestyle in 26.43 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 59.32 seconds. McCoy teamed with Casey Meszaros, Haley Pritkin and Kristen Lenard to take the 400 relay in 4:00.39.
