Sanchez finished in 15:57.8, just ahead of teammate Matt Lytle (16:00.4) in second place. Lakes won the meet with 75 points, and R-B was second with 79. Sanchez and Lytle finished 4-5 at the Wauconda Invitational one week earlier. Girls Athlete of the Week KATIE ADAMS Marengo, freshman Adams missed the Warren Invitational a week earlier because of a sore foot, but rebounded to win Grant’s James Taylor Invitational Saturday at Camp Henry Horner. Adams won the 3-mile race in 18:29.85, almost a minute ahead of Zion-Benton’s Lorie Reid. Marengo also placed juniors Ava Henning and Katie Sprague in eighth and ninth, but did not have five runners to place in the team standings. Noteworthy Top performances: Richmond-Burton freshman Skylar Bayer took fifth at the Grant Invitational in 19:39.21, leading the Rockets to second place as a team with 75 points. Zion-Benton won with 57. Woodstock juniors J.D. Fuller and Phil Meyer took third and sixth at the Bartlett Invitational as the Blue Streaks finished third as a team. Crystal Lake South sophomore Brian Roesslein was sixth as the Gators were fourth as a team. At the Palatine Invitational, Crystal Lake Central’s Ryan Alvarez took 11th, which was the best local finish. Cary-Grove’s Phil Fairleigh was 17th and McHenry’s Jeff Sabatka was 21st. Gearing up: This is the last big weekend for most teams to compete before their respective conference meets kick off the postseason. A few teams compete Oct. 9, but many have that date open. Oct. 16 is the date of conference meets, which will be followed by regionals, sectionals and then state. This Week’s Top Meets PEORIA INVITATIONAL 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Detweiller Park Boys and girls teams from Cary-Grove, Huntley and McHenry, and the girls team from Crystal Lake South, get a look at the course that hosts the IHSA Cross Country State Meets in early November. PAT HARLAND INVITATIONAL 10 a.m. Saturday, at Antioch Boys and girls teams from Jacobs, Johnsburg, Marian Central, Marengo and Richmond-Burton will compete. Crystal Lake Central and Crystal Lake South will send their boys teams, and Prairie Ridge will send its girls team. |
