WOODSTOCK – Crystal Lake Central’s girls golf team came into Wednesday’s Fox Valley Conference meet undefeated in conference play and the defending conference champions. The Tigers had five of the top 10 scores, including Sarah Mieth’s 11-over par 84, as Central (372) repeated as conference champion by 19 shots against Prairie Ridge, which had 391, in the meet at Crystal Woods Golf Club. Huntley (437) finished fourth, while Jacobs (445) took fifth. Dundee-Crown (532) was sixth with Johnsburg (597) seventh. Mieth took medalist honors by six shots over the Wolves’ Allison Holly, who won the event the past two years and shot a 90. Huntley’s Katlyn Anderberg finished third with a 94. Central coach Kathy Speaker said the key was consistent scoring from all of her golfers. “All year long, we have had balanced scoring,” Speaker said. “You never know who’s going to score and who’s not, like [Wednesday], my No. 7 golfer [Amanda Willis] was my No. 4 scorer [96]. Speaker added that Mieth, a senior at Crystal Lake South (which co-ops with Central), had put it all together late in the season. “She’s been working really hard,” Speaker said. “She struggled all the beginning of the season. She practices and focuses and is peaking at the right time.” Mieth, who shot a 4-over 40 on the first nine before retreating to a 8-over on the back, said that while she didn’t feel so good to start, the ending made it better. “I started kind of nervous and didn’t really know how it was going to go,” Mieth said. “I ended up shooting very good, I birdied the par-4 first hole and that just fueled everything. My coach wouldn’t tell me how the other girls were doing. She just told me no one else had my score so just keep playing well. I just had to play my own game.” Mieth added that her key to the winning round was keeping herself under control. “I had a couple of holes where I could have just blown up and not be able to continue on,” Mieth said. “I told myself though to just calm down, take another shot and you’ll be fine. I just got myself through it one hole at a time.” Holly said that she warmed up well but things didn’t go her way. “I came here and was hitting the round real well on the driving range,” she said. “I got onto the course and just kind of lost it. Nothing was really clicking. The weather was really cold in the morning and it made a difference.” |
