CARPENTERSVILLE – For Dundee-Crown swimming coach Kendra Everett, dual meets are a work in progress. “We use duel meets as a gauge of ‘What have you been doing in practice and is it working?’ ” Everett said. “When you get into the big meets, it’s more ‘You’ve done the work, now let’s see how much better you can be.’ ” What Everett is practicing must be working, as the Chargers defeated Cary-Grove, 97-69, in a Fox Valley Conference meet. D-C was up by three points after six events, and ran away with the meet by winning the remaining five events. Overall, the Chargers took first in six events. They also placed first and second in the 50 meter freestyle, the 100 meter backstroke and the 400 meter freestyle relay. The Chargers’ Jessica Humanski took first in the 500 meter freestyle in 5:17.18, and combined with Morgan Knight, Danielle Cross, and Colleen Champa to take the 200 freestyle relay in 2:08.94. She also won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:54.55 with Courtney Cymerman, Champa and Ashley Skoog. Along with the relay wins, Champa also won the 100 butterfly in 1:15.70 and took second in the 200 freestyle in 2:20.19. “It’s nice to be able to rely on multiple people to help bring in a win,” Everett said. “Swimming is an individual sport but it’s a team sport too, and you can see that in the relays.” Despite the loss, Cary-Grove coach Caitlin Sullivan was happy with her team’s performance, even though the Trojans didn’t have their full team available. C-G was without top swimmers Courtney Mega, Molly English and Megan Franz, who all missed because of injury or illness, Sullivan said. Lauren Curtis won two individual events for the Trojans, taking the 200 freestyle in 2:19.62 and the 100 freestyle in 1:06.33. She also swam a leg in the 200 medley relay that won in 2:25.06, with Emily Griswold, Brianna Musielak and Jordan Starr. “The hard swims, the fast finishes ... was everything we could ask for at this point in the season,” Sullivan said. “Our splits were showing buildup at the end where they are able to finish even faster than they were swimming. All of these show really strong swims.” |
