McHenry wins Grayslake N. volleyball tourney

GRAYSLAKE – McHenry’s girls volleyball team won the Grayslake North Volley for the Cure Invitational by going 5-0 on Saturday.

The Warriors (17-7) defeated Grayslake North’s JV, Mundelein and Grant to win their pool with a record of 3-0. In the semifinals they defeated Rockford East, 25-11, 25-22, then won the championship with a 25-21, 21-25, 25-23 win against Mundelein. Storm Melnick (81 digs), Danielle Tonyan (50 kills) and Katie Niehoff (105 assists) led McHenry in the tournament.

Crystal Lake Central Tournament: Crystal Lake Central went 3-0 and won the tournament with a 5-0 record.

Schaumburg Invitational: Cary-Grove defeated St. Charles North, 25-20, 25-11, to claim the championship with a 5-0 record.

The Trojans (26-4) defeated Bartlett, Stevenson, and St. Charles North in pool play to claim a berth in the championship semifinals, where they defeated rival Crystal Lake South, 25-21, 25-16.

St. Charles East/Mizuno Cup: At Great Lakes Volleyball Center in North Aurora, Prairie Ridge took third in the Silver Bracket to finish in 11th place with a record of 3-2.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Wheeling Wildcat Invitational: At Heritage Park, Haley Loprieno finished fourth with a time of 18:11 and led Huntley (176 points) to a sixth-place team finish at the 18-team event. Barrington (67) won the meet.

Harvard Invitational: At Milky Way Park, Richmond-Burton’s team of Skyler Bayer and Sami Wilkings ran a time of 42:22 to take first-place in the relay-style meet.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Hersey Jamboree: At Arlington Heights, Courtney Matthys won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:18 and took fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:12) as McHenry placed fourth with 172 points. Jacobs (49) placed 10th and was led by Paulina Gawrysiuk’s eighth-place time in the 100 backstroke.

BOYS SOCCER

Marian Central 4, Chicago Christian 1: At Woodstock, Kyle Gust scored three goals and assisted on the other, and Ben Platta had two assists in a Suburban Christian Conference win for the Hurricanes (17-4 overall, 5-2 SCC) against the Knights.

Grayslake Central 3, Woodstock 1: At Grayslake, the Rams (4-11-0, 4-6-0) defeated the Blue Streaks (7-12-0, 4-7-0) in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division action.

Johnsburg 1, Grant 0: At Johnsburg, the Skyhawks (11-5-2) earned the non-conference win behind Kevin Dombrowski’s goal. Robert DeRosa earned the shutout with six saves.

Huntley 4, Belvidere 1: At Huntley, the Red Raiders (8-10-2) broke up a 1-1 halftime tie with three unanswered goals, including a goal and an assist by Javi Diaz. Kevin Montelongo made three saves for Huntley in the non-conference win.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Harvard Invitational: At Milky Way Park, the team of Ian Sanchez and Matt Lytle won with a time of 34:42 in the relay-style invitational and led Richmond-Burton (16) to a first-place finish in the six-team event.

Wheeling Invitational: At Heritage Park, Joe Mollica (16:52) placed 69th, and Huntley (453 points) finished 16th in the 20-team event. Lake Zurich (71) won the meet.

BOYS HOCKEY

Prairie Ridge Invitational: At Crystal, Prairie Ridge defeated Fenwick, 6-5, and lost to Hamilton Southeatern, 6-5, as the Wolves went 1-1.
