C-G runs back to state

SCHAUMBURG – For a third consecutive year, the Cary-Grove boys cross country team is headed to the IHSA Class 3A State Cross Country Meet in Peoria.

The Trojans’ Phil Fairleigh led all runners in Saturday’s Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional at Busse Woods with a time of 15:48 to help propel C-G (124 points) to a third-place finish. Palatine (64) was first, followed by Mount Prospect (97).

The state meet will be at Detweiller Park in Peoria on Saturday.

Class 1A Aurora Christian Sectional: At Oakhurst Forest Preserve in Aurora, Newman Central Catholic was first, and Rockford Christian’s Justin Rehfeldt led all runners with a time of 15:53.9. Harvard’s Alex Kick placed 55th in 17:08.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Class 2A Harvard Regional: At Harvard, the host Hornets (23-12) beat Rockford Lutheran, 25-15, 25-15, to claim the Class 2A regional championship. Harvard will face Newman Central Catholic in an Oregon Sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Class 3A Belvidere North Regional: At Belvidere, Abby Gilleland had 18 assists and Maddy Zeek and Kaitlyn Flynn each had three aces to lead Marian Central (27-10) to a 25-11, 25-13 win against Marengo (20-14). The Hurricanes will face Freeport in a Rochelle Sectional semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Class 3A CL Central Regional: At Crystal Lake, the host Tigers (34-3) won their regional against Richmond-Burton, 25-18, 25-21, behind Julie Jeziorowski’s 15 digs and Lindsay Anderson’s 10 kills. Central will face Wauconda in a Vernon Hills Sectional semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Class 3A Antioch Regional: At Antioch, Prairie Ridge (28-9) beat regional host Antioch, 25-8, 25-19, and advanced to a Vernon Hills Sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday against St. Viator. Taylor Brauneis had 11 kills, and Taylor Humm had 17 digs for the Wolves.

Class 3A Regina Dominican Regional: At Wilmette, St. Viator beat Johnsburg, 25-20, 25-16, to capture a regional championship.

Kelsey Nobilio had 15 digs for Johnsburg (21-16),
