By ANDY SCHMIDT anschmidt@nwherald.com ALGONQUIN – Jacobs golfer Scott Cahill fell short of making it to last year’s IHSA Class 3A State Tournament and made it a goal to get there this year. Cahill, a junior, did that and more. After winning the Fox Valley Conference Meet, he finished 17th at the Class 3A state tournament in Bloomington to earn All-State honors. For his accomplishments, Cahill has been named the Northwest Herald Boys Golfer of the Year by the sports staff with input from local coaches. Cahill averaged under par in nine-hole meets and averaged 73 in 18-hole events this season. He shot an even-par 71 at the FVC Meet to win by three shots over Prairie Ridge’s Brad Hyland. Cahill added another even-par round at the Lake Forest Sectional to qualify for state. “I had a great year – very consistent,” Cahill said. “[It was] very good to play well all year and just enjoy the success. “It was fun at state. I didn’t play too well the first day. It was a little disappointing, but I did the best I could, and I played very well the second day. It was a great experience going down there and seeing all my friends from the summer tournaments.” Jacobs coach Jeremy Bauer was left in awe of Cahill’s play. “It was pretty unbelievable – the numbers speak for themselves,” Bauer said. “He carried us, him and Josh [Kopka]. We didn’t have a consistent [No.] 3 or 4 man, and going 9-2 and finishing second [in the FVC], that was a pretty big accomplishment.” Coaches such as Woodstock’s J.C. Wise want to see what’s next for Cahill. “This is my 16th year coaching, and he is right up there with what we have seen in this conference,” Wise said. “He has matured a lot, which is great to see. I think that will help him as a player. I look forward to seeing what he can do next year.” The next step for Cahill is picking a college golf program, which he hopes to do in the summer. Cahill said he is looking at Miami of Ohio, Minnesota and San Jose State and that Miami has the lead. “I really like Miami; they’ve got a good team,” Cahill said. “I’m going down there for a visit in the next few weeks. They showed a lot of interest in me and what I’m doing.” |
