C-G perfect in FVC under MuzzyCARY – Going undefeated in any sport is no easy accomplishment. Cary-Grove boys golf coach Kelly Muzzy and the Trojans pulled it off this season, going 11-0 in the Fox Valley Conference and winning the FVC Meet. For that achievement, Muzzy is named the Northwest Herald Boys Golf Coach of the Year by the sports staff with input from local coaches. Muzzy said he was happy to finish off something that eluded him last time his team was undefeated in the regular season. “I was proud of our guys. It is a difficult feat,“ Muzzy said. “We got the right teams at home and big wins on the road. We beat Crystal Lake Central by one shot and beat CL South on the road – big win for us. I think we might have been undefeated once before when it was a 10-team conference and lost the [FVC Meet]. I believe this is the first time we won it all with me as the coach.” Muzzy leaned heavily on seniors Matt Efflandt, Ryan Laughlin, Scott Brady and Mike Olszewski as C-G qualified as a team for sectionals. “It has a lot to do with our four seniors, who did a lot in their offseason to get ready for this,” Muzzy said. “They played more confidently. When we played a big match, I was more nervous than them. I was more worked up. They had more confidence than I did, and it showed when it came down to the big ones. “They were a nice bunch of kids that had great leaders with work ethic and great to be around. Even outside of golf, this was a great group and a lot of fun for me.” South coach Curt Wadlington said Muzzy deserved credit for “He is a class act,” Wadlington said. “He not only knows how to coach them but takes the talent he has and puts it all together and makes it successful.” |
