


McHenry takes 3rd in Grant tourneyFOX LAKE – A strong defensive start got the McHenry boys basketball team a third-place trophy at the Grant Tournament on Saturday. The Warriors (7-4) defeated Grayslake North, 67-54, after jumping to a 13-4 lead after the first quarter. McHenry took a nine-point lead into halftime and extended it by four going into the fourth, outscoring Grayslake North, 24-20, in the third quarter. Jimmy Preston led McHenry scorers with 21 points, and Josh McNaughton added 17. Ryan Terrill and Brian Madson each scored nine points for the Warriors. DeKalb Tournament: Chicago North Grand defeated Woodstock North, 45-42, on the final day of the tournament after holding the Thunder scoreless in the third quarter. Jordan Kempf scored 15 for Woodstock North, and Trey Grover added 12. Also at DeKalb, Huntley defeated Harlem, 51-43. Tyler Brunschon had 13 points, and Troy Miller had 10 for the Red Raiders (9-4). Hampshire’s game against Wilmington was one of three games postponed because of snow. Elgin Tournament: Guilford defeated Dundee-Crown, 62-49, in the tournament’s consolation bracket. D-C (1-9) stayed with the Vikings except for in the third quarter, when it was outscored, 16-4. Kevin Cronin had 16 points for the Chargers. GIRLS BASKETBALL Mundelein Tournament: Huntley defeated Vernon Hills, 56-40, after scoring 27 points in the second quarter to lead the Cougars, 38-16, at the half. Rachel Chapuis led Huntley (6-8) with 15 points, and Meagan Flynn had 12. Also at Mundelein, Rockford Auburn defeated Prairie Ridge, 65-55. The loss left the Wolves (6-8) in fourth place. The Knights took a 17-point lead into halftime after outscoring Prairie Ridge, 21-7, in the second quarter. Emily Bruksch had 16 points for the Wolves, and Katrina Kinowski scored 12. Dundee-Crown Charger Classic: At Carpentersville, defending champion Fenwick defeated Dundee-Crown, 67-24, in a first-round matchup. Ali Sanders led D-C (2-10) with 13 points, including three three-pointers. Montini Christmas Tournament: At Lombard, Jacobs went 0-2 to open the tournament, first falling to Chicago Bogan, 42-29, and then to Montini, 62-37. Maria Tamburrino led Jacobs in scoring in both games, putting up 11 points against Bogan and 17, including three three-pointers, against Montini. BOYS HOCKEY PREP 4, Huntley/Lake Zurich 1: At Huntley, the Red Raiders lost to the Palatine-Rolling Meadows-Elk Grove-Prospect co-op in a Chicago Metro Central crossover.
