Six Hornets wrestle into quarterfinals

PRINCETON – Harvard placed six wrestlers into the quarterfinals of the two-day Princeton Invitational on Friday.

The Hornets are in fifth place at the tournament with 48 points. Chance Shelton (112 pounds), Dillon Cowan (135), Jerry Gratz (145), Andy Kick (171), Cody Melson (189) and Matt Melson (285) all reached the quarterfinals.

Prairie Ridge’s Brian Cullen (103), Zach Synon (112), Mike Smith (119), Tim Zegers (189), and David Vinton (215) each earned spots in the quarterfinals for the Wolves (39.50, 7th place). Porta leads after the first day of the tournament with 63 points.

Johnsburg 41, Woodstock North 15: At Woodstock, Zach Hummel (119 pounds) and Rich Kleitsch (135) had two of Johnsburg’s seven pins, and the Skyhawks defeated the Thunder in Fox Valley Conference action.

Rob Davis (112) and Dustin Kroening (145), had pins for the Thunder.

CL Central 55, Woodstock 19: At Woodstock, Trevor Jauch (125) and Joey Kielbasa (152) pinned their opponents as the Tigers defeated the Blue Streaks in an FVC meet. Kenny Robson (160) earned a pin for Woodstock.

McHenry 42, Huntley 16: At Huntley, the Warriors got wins from Wade Lardy (125) and Drew Dorman (215) as McHenry defeated Huntley in FVC action. The Red Raiders were led by Lucas Rogers (130), who had a 2-1, triple-overtime victory.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Grayslake Central 72, Crystal Lake Central 51: At Grayslake, Joe Pijanowski scored 14 points and Mike Fior added 12 points for the Tigers (3-11 overall, 0-1 Fox Valley Conference Fox Division), who lost to the Rams (8-5, 0-1).

Luther North 66, Alden-Hebron 42: At Hebron, Shane Engelbrecht led the Giants with 16 points in their Northeastern Athletic Conference loss to Luther North. Jared Hilton added 13 points for A-H (3-8, 1-2).

BOYS HOCKEY

CL South 9, Latin 1: At Chicago, Brian Lichterman had a hat trick and an assist in the Gators’ win.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

CL South 50, Dundee-Crown 28: At Crystal Lake, Michelle Gaede scored 13 points and Katie Burton added 12 as the Gators defeated the Chargers in an FVC Valley contest. South (11-8 overall, 2-2 FVC Valley) outscored D-C in the third quarter, 17-2. Ali Sanders scored eight to lead D-C (2-15, 0-4).

Hampshire 67, North Boone 28: At Hampshire, Jessica VanDorin scored 18 points on three-pointers, and the Whip-Purs got a Big Northern Conference East Division win against the Vikings (5-11, 1-2). Karla Vietinghoff added 14 points for Hampshire (14-0, 2-0).

Burlington Central 58, Harvard 28: At Harvard, Denise Cisneros and Lindsay Melson each scored six points in a BNC East loss for the Hornets (1-15, 0-4) against the Rockets (9-5, 2-1).

Guerin Prep 50, Marian Central 38: At River Grove, Tori Maher scored 10 points in a Suburban Christian Conference Gold Division loss for the Hurricanes (2-13, 0-2).
