Johnsburg wrestling team finishes 3-0 at Wauconda Duals

WAUCONDA – Johnsburg’s wrestling team went 3-0 on Saturday with impressive victories against Vernon Hills, 51-24, Antioch, 47-31, and Wauconda, 39-29, at the Wauconda Bulldog Duals.

The Skyhawks were led by Justin Peete (160 pounds) and Brandon Nugent (189), who went 3-0 at the meet.

Peete earned three of his wins by a pin, and Nugent earned two pins and a 16-0 major decision.

Bobby McKay (103) went 2-1 with a pin and a 10-4 decision.

Huntley lost its other two matches to Vernon Hills, 42-17, and Wauconda, 41-35, to finish 0-3 on the day.

Cary-Grove Triangular: At Cary, Mike Underwood (112) and Josh Nelson (145) each went 2-0, and Cary-Grove defeated Fremd, 45-21, and lost Libertyville, 49-13.

Lake Forest Quadrangular: McHenry ran its dual-meet record to 14-5 with wins against North Chicago, 79-0, Lake Forest, 64-8 and Lakes, 50-21.

The Warriors’ Jim Ferguson won three matches at 145 pounds with a pin, a technical fall and a decision. Every other McHenry wrestler to go 3-0 had at least one forfeit victory.

Gurnee Warren Duals: At Gurnee, Richmond-Burton defeated Marian Central, 61-9, and Grayslake Central, 50-22, and lost to Warren, 42-23, to finish 2-1. The Rockets were led by Matt Ellis (119), Joe Ellis (125), and Connor Graves (145) as they each went 3-0.

Marian Central went 0-3 losing to R-B, Grayslake Central, 37-32, and Warren, 57-18. Jared Koch went 3-0 to lead the Hurricanes.

BOYS SWIMMING

Woodstock Invitational: Reilly Shanahan broke state-qualifying times in the 50-yard freestyle (21.92 seconds) and 100 freestyle (48.42) to lead McHenry to 471 points and a second-place finish.

Woodstock (421) was led by its 200 medley (1:55) and 400 freestyle (3:38) relay teams, both of which finished third.

Lincoln-Way North (489) won the eight-team event.

Hersey Invitational: At Arlington Heights, Ryan Krug tied for first in the 200 freestyle (1:56) and took second in the 100 free (53.11) to lead Jacobs/Dundee-Crown (68.5) to a fourth-place finish.

Conant won the meet with 130 points.

Bison Invitational: At Buffalo Grove, Ed Griswold took third in the 200 freestyle (1:52) and was part of the first-place 200 freestyle relay (1:34) to lead Cary-Grove (203) to a second-place finish. Lake Park (211) won the 11-team meet.

BOYS BOWLING

Vernon Hills Sectional: At Brunswick Zone in Vernon Hills, Jake Pauletto (1,238 pins) and Kent Grimes (1,234) led McHenry (5,790) to a fourth-place finish and are among a group of bowlers across the state hoping to claim at-large bids to the state tournament next weekend in O’Fallon. Huntley (5,572) placed sixth and was led by Dylan Rehmer (1,163).

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

Nile West Invitational: At Skokie, Heather Kill took first on the balance beam to lead Prairie Ridge (67.75) to a ninth-place finish. St. Edward (73.60) won the meet.
