Today's action from Day 1 of the IHSA state wrestling tournament:


Class 1A

Dillon Cowan (135) and Dan Stott (160) both advanced to the quarterfinals for Harvard. Cowan had a major decision against Coal City's Robert Shoemaker, 8-0, and will face Takii Adnew from Petersburg in the quarterfinals.

Stott pinned Mount Olive's Adam Osmoe in 4:26 and will wrestle Camp Point Central's Jacob Smith in the quarterfinals. Cody Melson (189) lost for the Hornets against Andrew Patterson from Argenta in a 14-7 decision.

Class 2A

Richmond-Burton's Joe Ellis (125 pounds) and Jack Dechow (160) both won their first-round matches to advance to the Friday evening quarterfinal round. Ellis won by decision against Joliet Catholic's Adrian Palacios, 5-2. Ellis will face Zane Richards, ranked No. 1 by illinoismatmen.com, in the quarterfinals.

Dechow beat Lincoln's Colt Hickey, 5-3, in overtime. Dechow will see Montini's Dimitri Willis in the quarterfinals.  

Prairie Ridge's David Vinton (215) advanced to the quarterfinals by pinning Tyler Finkbeiner from Champaign Central in 5:32. Vinton will wrestle Vernon Hills' Rory Klema in the quarterfinals. Also for the Wolves, Mike Smith (119) lost in the first round to Yorkville's Clayton Bass, 4-2.

Marian Central's Jared Koch decisioned Montini's Bob Grimes, 6-2 in the first round. Koch faces Marmion's Nico Jimenez in the quarterfinals.

Class 3A

Dundee-Crown's Miko Villanueva was the only area Class 3A wrestler to make it out of the quarterfinals at the state wrestling tournament today. Villanueva decisoned Joliet Townships's A.J. Juarez, 3-1 in overtime to advance to the semifinals at 112 pounds.

Crystal Lake South's Nick Fontanetta (103) was pinned in his quarterfinal by Belleville West's Mech Spraggins in 2:21. The loss was Fontanetta's first this season.

Huntley's Lucas Rogers (130) lost to Lyons Drew Bates in a 10-4 decision.
