Jacobs to play for Cup crown

BENSENVILLE – Ed Weine scored a hat trick before Eric Lichtenvoort delivered the game-winner as the Jacobs hockey team defeated Highland Park, 4-3, in their AHAI Blackhawk Cup White Division State Tournament semifinal.

The Golden Eagles (26-19-4) advance to Tuesday’s 8:35 p.m. championship game against Niles Notre Dame.

“I’m really excited about this,” Jacobs coach Chip Anderson said. “This is why you coach. This is why you play. All the running hills in August, that’s what this is for.”

Weine, a defenseman, scored a pair of unassisted goals and Jacobs led, 3-2, after two periods. Highland Park’s Zachary Kalter scored early in the third period to tie the score, but Lichtenvoort came through with the game-winner with 9:27 remaining.

Lichtenvoort faked a shot, put a spin move on a defender, then walked in for a slapshot that got past goalie Michael Gordon. Jacobs goalie Buzzy Amann had 28 saves, 10 in the third period.

“This is a great way to end the season,” Lichtenvoort said. “[The championship] is going to be a good game. I hope we come out on top.”

Highland Park finished 30-25-5.
