Alden-Hebron enjoys road trip

JACKSONVILLE – Alden-Hebron’s softball team lost its season opener Saturday against Cullom Tri-Point, 8-7, but coach Jerry Lagerhausen wouldn’t have traded the trip downstate for anything.

The Giants made the five-hour drive to the Lenz Field complex the night before, and although A-H’s other scheduled game was rained out, Lagerhausen said it was a great experience. Playing on Lenz Field’s synthetic grass infield made the game even more special.

“It was like playing on a professional field,” Lagerhausen said. “They treated them like professionals. This was just a good way to start the season.”

For A-H, Lexi Wanderer drove in two runs, Taylor Hack and Marissah Knoll had a hit and scored two runs, and Haley Lagerhausen struck out 13 in six innings but took the loss.

BASEBALL

Varna Midland 12, Alden-Hebron 10 (5 inn.): At Jacksonville, Mitch Huber went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI, and Tim Talbert went 1 for 3 with two RBIs for the Giants (0-1) in a non-conference loss in a game shortened by rain.
