Melson strikes out 19 in Hornets’ victoryPOPLAR GROVE – Harvard’s Lindsay Melson struck out so many batters Tuesday that her teammates were bragging about the outs they helped her get. Melson struck out 19 of the 21 total outs to lead the Hornets to a 12-3, Big Northern Conference East Division win against North Boone. Harvard coach Connie Weathersby said the wind was blowing hard at the pitcher’s back, which only helped Melson’s natural speed on her fastball. “You could actually watch the (pitched) ball speed up,” Weathersby said. “That also helped [Melson], who already throws 63 (mph).” Melson, who broke the Hornets’ season strikeout record last year with 169, has 129 in 11 games this year. At that pace, she could finish with more than 400.
