Bondi had a huge night at the McHenry County Track and Field Meet on Friday at Crystal Lake Central’s Owen Metcalf Field. He took part in three first-place finishes and one third as Central took second to McHenry in the team standings. McHenry won the meet with 102 points, repeating as champion, but in large part because of Bondi, the Warriors needed every point they had. Bondi anchored winning the 4x800-meter relay team with Chris Alvarez, Eric Loria and Paul Dunteman, which won in 8:06.65. Bondi then won the 800 meters in 1:57.61 and came back to take third place in the 1,600 meters in 4:31.49. Bondi completed his night by running the third leg of the victorious 4x400 team with Dylan McKinney, Brett Schuld and Garrett Davis. They won that race in 3:27.22. Girls Kayla Beattie Woodstock, jr. Beattie won the 3,200 and 1,600 meters with a pair of records at the McHenry County Track and Field Meet on Friday at Crystal Lake Central’s Owen Metcalf Field. Beattie ran the 3,200 in 10:43.06 to erase Woodstock’s Katie Hartmann’s record from 1998 of 10:56.8. She came back in the 1,600 to set another record, finishing in 5:04.64, well ahead of Central’s Haley Staples’ record of 5:12.06, set in 2006. In both races, Beattie’s sister, Elise, would have broken the records as well, as she ran times of 10:47.42 and 5:05.14. Noteworthy McNeely out: Johnsburg sophomore Kelly McNeely ended her last two running seasons with state medals, but doing so again will be a tall order. McNeely recently was diagnosed with a stress fracture in her lower right leg. She missed a significant amount of the cross country season with a stress fracture in her left foot, trained in the pool, then returned in time to qualify for state and finished 10th in the IHSA Class 2A State Cross Country Meet. McNeely is back in the pool now, hoping she can keep up her cardiovascular training enough for a possible return, but she has only two weeks before the sectional. She finished seventh in the Class 2A 3,200 in state track last spring. This week’s top meets Woodstock Girls Invitational 4:30 p.m. today Huntley, Jacobs, Marengo, Alden-Hebron, Harvard and Woodstock North will join the host Blue Streaks in the meet. Palatine Relays 8:30 a.m. Saturday The 74th running of the event, one of the state’s oldest track meets, will feature boys teams from Huntley, Jacobs and Prairie Ridge. The Prairie Ridge girls team also will be competing. – Joe Stevenson jstevenson@nwherald.com |
