CL South erases 5-0 deficit with 7-run 6th

CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake South coach Brian Bogda told his players to chip away after falling behind, 5-0, in the first inning of Thursday’s FVC crossover against Grayslake Central.

When that strategy failed, the Gators used a seven-run sixth inning instead.

Greg Pagnotta hit the go-ahead, three-run home run for South (12-9 overall, 9-5 FVC Valley), as the Gators beat the Rams, 9-7.

“Whenever we get in these situations, we always tell the kids to get a run here and get a run there,” Bogda said. “That didn’t work out today, but with the wind howling out, we knew we had a good chance to get back in it.”

“Even with the wind, Pagnotta’s home run was a no-doubter.”

Mike Benson (3-1) pitched four innings of relief to pick up the win for the Gators. Austin Leggett took the loss for Grayslake Central (14-6, 8-4 FVC Fox).

CL Central 8, Dundee-Crown 5: At Crystal Lake, Connor Sadzeck went 3 for 3 with a home run, a double and 2 RBIs to lead the Tigers past the Chargers in an FVC crossover. Dylan Cysewski (6-2) picked up the win for Central (14-8, 6-6 FVC Fox), and Mike Lodi got the loss for D-C (10-11, 7-6 FVC Valley).

Huntley 7, Woodstock 4: At Woodstock, Andre Sopena went 2 for 4 with a run and a triple and Matt Morin (3-2) struck out two and earned the FVC crossover win for the Red Raiders (18-4, 11-3 FVC Valley). Tyler Weiss and Matt Buhrow each doubled for Woodstock (7-14, 2-10 FVC Fox).

Cary-Grove 26, Woodstock North 8 (5 inn.): At Woodstock, Eddie Bauer went 3 for 3 with four RBIs, and Ryan Baltes went 1 for 2 with a double and two RBIs as the Thunder (4-15, 0-12 FVC Fox) lost to the Trojans (14-8, 10-4 FVC Valley) in FVC crossover action. The Trojans hit eight home runs in the win.

Grayslake North 4, Jacobs 3: At Grayslake, Scott Meyer struck out three and gave up four runs in a FVC crossover loss for the Golden Eagles. Nate Andersen and Brett Kale each went 2 for 3 for Jacobs (9-10, 6-8 FVC Valley). Matt Robinson pitched all seven innings without giving up an earned run for the Knights (2-20, 2-1 FVC Fox).

Harvard 9, North Boone 8: At Poplar Grove, Chase Blazier went 2 for 3 with a pair of two-run home runs and T.J. Stephens (3-2) earned the win for the Hornets (17-5, 4-2 BNC East) in a Big Northern Conference East Division game.

Burlington Central 22, Marengo 2 (5-inn): At Marengo, A.J. Lohff went 2 for 3 with a solo home run and the Indians (3-18, 0-6 BNC East) dropped a BNC East contest to the Rockets.

St. Edward 5, Marian Central 3: At Woodstock, Casey DiPietro went 1 for 3 with a double and two and RBIs and the Hurricanes (14-6 overall, 5-3 SCC Blue) lost to the Green Wave in Suburban Christian Conference play.

Rockford Christian 6, Alden-Hebron 5: At Rockford, Ian Johnson went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs and Cody Eskridge went 1 for 3 with a double as the Giants (1-14 overall, 1-5 NAC) lost a Northeastern Athletic Conference contest.

TRACK

Grant Invitational : At Fox Lake, Dakota Pruitt place third in the 1,600 meters (4:47) and Jake Szramek placed third in the pole vault (10-0) to lead Johnsburg (19 points) to a sixth-place finish. Lakes (210) won the event.

TENNIS

Prairie Ridge 6, Jacobs 1: At Crystal Lake, Connor Greenwald won at No. 1 singles as the Wolves won the Fox Valley Conference match.

Quinn Revak and Brandon Curtis added a win at No. 1 doubles for Prairie Ridge (9-2, 9-0 FVC). Brian Kolzer and Kinchit Joshi won at No. 2 doubles for the Golden Eagles.

Cary-Grove 4, Dundee-Crown 3: At Carpentersville, Chris Federighi won at No. 1 singles as the Trojans won the FVC match.

Matt Butler and Mike Scott added wins at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, in an FVC win for C-G (3-11, 2-7). Liam Blume and Kevin Brandstatter won at No. 1 doubles for the Chargers (3-10, 0-9).

CL South 7, McHenry 0: At Crystal Lake, Cam Laktash won at No. 1 singles as the Gators defeated the Warriors (7-6, 5-6) in FVC play.

Scott Subak and Andy DeBoer won at No. 1 doubles for South (14-0, 10-0).

Johnsburg 4, Grayslake Central 3: At Grayslake, Dan Martin won at No. 1 singles as the Skyhawks won the FVC match.

Brendon Regner and Chris Goulet won at No. 1 doubles for Johnsburg (12-2, 8-2).

CL Central 6, Woodstock 1: At Woodstock, Tyler George (No. 1 singles) and Jake Lenhard (No. 3 singles) won their matches and led the Tigers in their FVC win against the Blue Streaks. Cameron Fyfe and Jon Larson earned the lone win for Woodstock (2-8 overall, 1-7 FVC).

Grayslake North 7, Woodstock North 0: At Woodstock, the Thunder (1-11, 0-9) were swept in FVC play by the Knights.

Rockford Lutheran 4, Marengo 0: At Marengo, the Indians (0-12) pushed both doubles matches to three sets before losing each and being swept in non-conference play.

WATER POLO

McHenry 11, Glenbrook South 8: At Glenview, Reilly Shanahan scored four goals and Kyle Braun and Drew Schmitt each scored two goals for McHenry.
