


Popenfoose eclipses 200 feet in discusCRYSTAL LAKE – Huntley’s Marcus Popenfoose reached hallowed ground Friday night in the Crystal Lake Central Invitational at Owen Metcalf Field. The Red Raiders senior threw the discus 202 feet, 4 inches to win the event by more than 50 feet. Popenfoose’s throw was the third 200-foot throw in state history, according to the IHSA website. The other two 200-foot throws came from Lake Park’s Dan Block, last year’s Class 3A state champion. Popenfoose was runner-up. Popenfoose’s previous best throw was 199-8 in the Class 3A preliminaries at the IHSA Boys State Track and Field Meet last year. Popenfoose’s 202-4 is the second-best throw in state history. Popenfoose’s teammate Cody Cameron took second in the discus Friday at 150-11. Central’s team won the invitational with 1071⁄2 points. Ryan Alvarez (3,200-meter run), Sean Buczek (triple jump), Michael Bondi (800) and Josiah Becker (pole vault) each won events for the Tigers. Woodstock finished in 10th place with 14 points. Mike Kremske took second in the 800. McHenry Relays: At McHenry, the Warriors track team won the relays for the fourth consecutive year with 139 points. Jon Schmitt, Carey Nolan, Oscar Anglada and Josh Holm won the 400-meter relay, the day’s final event, in 44.30 seconds to edge Minooka, which finished second with 138 points. Dundee-Crown finished fourth with 71 points. Prairie Ridge finished sixth with 52. SOFTBALL Cary-Grove 7, McHenry 0: At McHenry, Emma Gaulke had a two-run triple and scored in a five-run third inning for Cary-Grove as the Trojans notched a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win against McHenry. Lindsay Efflandt (14-3) earned the win for the Trojans (16-6 overall, 7-1 FVC Valley), giving up three earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. Alexis Haley added two RBIs and two hits, and Eleni Polites scored two runs with a double. Mikaela Mitsch took the loss but led the Warriors (8-9, 4-5) on offense, going 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Huntley 6, CL South 4: At Huntley, Taylor Larson improved to 12-5 for the Red Raiders (14-6, 6-2) in their FVC Valley win against the Gators (8-10, 3-5). Larson allowed three earned runs on five hits over seven innings and was 2 for 2 with a triple and two RBIs. Teammate Nikki DeMarco went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Vicki Pyan went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for the Gators. Prairie Ridge 5, Grayslake Central 2: At Grayslake, the Wolves (14-9, 8-1) were led by Lauren Seegers and Lexi Wachman who each had two hits, with Seegers adding two RBIs and Wachman scoring twice in their FVC Fox win against the Rams (5-15, 3-8). Pitcher Johanna Turner (8-6) earned the win, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out three in seven innings. Jacobs 7, Dundee-Crown 0: At Carpentersville, Marissa Lombardo threw a two-hit shutout for the Golden Eagles (11-5, 5-3) in their FVC Valley win against the Chargers (1-15, 0-9). Lombardo also had three RBIs, and Kara Arceneaux homered. BASEBALL Prairie Ridge 11, Dundee-Crown 9: At Carpentersville, Adam Enwiya earned the FVC crossover win for the Wolves (14-8, 9-3 FVC Fox).
