Whips, Indians head to state

ROCHELLE – Hampshire’s girls track and field team had two top individual finishers Saturday at the IHSA Class 2A Rochelle Sectional.

Cassie Kruse won the 800 meters (2:18.93), and Holly Plichta won the 3,200 (11:16.53) to qualify for the IHSA state meet for the Whip-Purs, who finished fourth overall. Plichta also qualified for state in the 1,600 (5:17.47), finishing third.

Hampshire’s 4x800 relay team took second (9:37.77) to qualify for state, followed by Marengo (9:50.67), which also qualified.

Marengo’s 4x200 relay took fourth (1:49.17) and Hampshire took fifth (1:49.18). Both qualified for state.

Marengo took fourth in the 4x100 (51.38), and Marengo’s Allison Rogutich took third (16.13) in the 100 high hurdles.


SOFTBALL

Harvard 5, Richmond-Burton 1: At Richmond, Harvard’s Lindsay Melson struck out seven and gave up two hits in a Big Northern Conference East Division win against Richmond-Burton (10-16 overall, 2-6 BNC East).

The Hornets (20-9, 6-4) were led at the plate by Michaela Binz (2 for 3, RBI).


SOCCER

Class 1A Rockford Christian Regional: Harvard’s season came to an end as the third-seeded Hornets lost to second-seeded Rockford Christian, 4-0, in a first-round game.

Class 2A Marengo Regional: Allison Wynn scored twice as No. 4 seed Woodstock beat fifth-seeded Woodstock North, 3-1. Teresa Arellano scored the third goal for the Blue Streaks (9-12-1), who play top-seeded Hampshire at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the regional semifinals.

Class 3A Barrington Regional: Mallory Fryer scored a goal for Dundee-Crown in the fourth overtime to give the fourth-seeded Chargers a 1-0 win against fifth-seeded Round Lake in a first-round game.

Hampshire 2, Richmond-Burton 1: At Richmond, Haylee Moscato made five saves, and Cassie Dumoulin and Alex Field scored goals for the Whip-Purs (17-5-1, 9-0-1) in a BNC East win against Richmond-Burton (7-13-1, 5-5). Emily Zeller and Kelsey Burke had assists on Dumoulin’s and Field’s goals.
