


Marian’s Luczak fans record 19MELROSE PARK – Marian Central’s Gregg Wikierak witnessed a feat Saturday he never had seen in more than three decades as a baseball coach. Hurricanes senior left-hander David Luczak struck out 19 batters as Marian beat Walther Lutheran, 5-0, in a Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division game. “It was an amazing performance,” Wikierak said. “In 31 years of coaching, I have never had a player get 19 of 21 outs in a game.” The performance set a school record for strikeouts in a game and tied for 26th in state history, according to the IHSA website. Luczak (6-1) allowed one hit. Karl Steiger led the Marian offense, going 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Cary-Grove 5, McHenry 3: At Cary, Kevin Weber earned a win as the Trojans defeated McHenry in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game. CL South 7, Huntley 3: At Crystal Lake, Mike Benson threw a complete game, and Chris Hauser went 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI as the Gators (19-10, 13-6) won an FVC Valley game against the Red Raiders (20-8, 13-6). The Raiders’ Chris Klein took the loss, but he also drove in a run. CL Central 5, Johnsburg 2: At Johnsburg, Connor Sadzeck struck out 12 and allowed three hits as the Tigers (17-12, 9-10) defeated the Skyhawks (10-17, 6-12) in an FVC Fox game. Sadzeck walked two and allowed two earned runs after throwing a no-hitter earlier in the week against C.J. Hernandez drove in a run for Johnsburg. Woodstock 3, Woodstock North 2: At Woodstock, Tony DiMaio struck out 10 and allowed three hits for his first pitching victory as the Blue Streaks (10-20, 4-16) defeated the Thunder (7-21, 0-19) in an FVC Fox game. Ryan Baltes drove in both runs with a double for the Thunder. Jacobs 6, Dundee-Crown 5: At Algonquin, Joe Ross (6-0) kept his perfect record intact, striking out five for the Golden Eagles (15-13, 9-10) in an FVC Valley win against the Chargers (10-19, 7-12). Matt Schmidt, Josh Kranz and Anthony Virgilio each drove in two runs for Jacobs. Stillman Valley 3-3, Marengo 1-2: At Stillman Valley, Jarvis Hernandez went 2 for 4 in the first game of a Big Northern Conference crossover doubleheader for the Indians (3-24), who lost both games. In the second game, Jarvis Hernandez, Jordan Hernandez, Kent Ganvik, Brad Seemann and Danny Domek had hits for Marengo. Alden-Hebron 15-17, Ethan Allen 1-5: At Hebron, the Giants swept a non-conference doubleheader in which both games ended after five innings because of the 10-run rule. Bryce Lalor won the opener, striking out eight. Logan Yerk went 4 for 5 with four RBIs in the two games. Illinois Math and Science 8, Alden-Hebron 4 (10 inn.): At Hebron, Giants pitcher Cody Eskridge had two triples and two RBIs in a Northeastern Athletic Conference loss for the Giants (4-18, 2-8), who were playing their third game of the day. St. Edward 9-4, Hampshire 3-3: At Elgin, Ryan Burke hit a pair of doubles, and Jared Weinke went 2 for 3 for the Whip-Purs (6-17) in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader sweep by the Green Wave. Marcus Quick, Tyler Crater and Ron Laramie doubled in the second game for the Whips. North Boone 4-0, Richmond-Burton 2-13: At Richmond, the Rockets (14-5, 4-5) lost the first game, a BNC East contest, then came back to win the second game, a non-division game. TENNIS Big Northern Conference Triangular: At Hampshire, the host Whip-Purs went 1-1 with a 5-0 win against Marengo and a 3-2 loss to Rockford Lutheran. Marengo lost to Rockford Lutheran, 4-1.
