


J’burg sends tennis doubles team to stateLAKE VILLA – Johnsburg’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Brayton Regner and sophomore Colin Goulet made it to the semifinals in the IHSA Lakes Boys Tennis Sectional on Saturday, qualifying the duo for the state tournament, which starts Thursday throughout the northwest suburbs. Regner and Goulet (25-5), the sixth seed, were defeated in the semifinals by Lake Forest’s Nikola Trukov and Paul Schlais, the top seed, 6-2, 6-4. Regner and Goulet beat the fourth-seeded team from Lake Forest to reach the semifinal. “All I can say is how happy I am for these two kids and the entire team,” Johnsburg coach Rick Bailey said. “It’s a giant upset, and a great win.” BASEBALL Prairie Ridge 17-16, Woodstock North 2-2: At Crystal Lake, the Wolves swept an FVC Fox doubleheader against the Thunder (7-26, 0-24) to claim a share of the division crown with Grayslake Central. Tyler Tennant (1-0) earned the win in Game 1, and Andrew Kovarik (7-2) earned the win in Game 2 for the Wolves (24-10, 19-5). Huntley 4-4, Jacobs 2-2: At Algonquin, the Red Raiders earned a share of the FVC Valley Division title with Cary-Grove by sweeping a doubleheader against Jacobs (18-15-1, 12-12). Bryce Only hit a two-run walkoff home run in the eighth inning to support starting pitcher Chris Klein (5-4), who went all eight innings and struck out eight, to give Huntley (24-9, 17-7) a win in Game 1. Cary-Grove 5-3, Dundee-Crown 3-4: At Cary, the host Trojans split two FVC Valley games with the Chargers. Steve Mihalik pitched three innings without allowing a hit to earn the win in Game 1. Chris Waylock had three hits for the Trojans (22-12, 17-7). In the second game, Kirk Hanselmann went 2 for 3 with an RBI for D-C (12-22, 9-15). McHenry 6-3, Crystal Lake South 2-11: At Crystal Lake, the Warriors and Gators split two games in the FVC Valley. Kyle Koenig pitched a complete game in the opener for McHenry (12-2, 15-9). In Game 2, Easton Kowalski CL Central 3-10, Woodstock 0-0: At Woodstock, starting pitchers Connor Sadzeck and Eddie Dunkel each allowed one hit as the Tigers (21-13, 13-11) won both of their FVC Fox matchups against the Blue Streaks (12-22, 6-18). Johnsburg 11, Grayslake North 1 (6 inn.): At Johnsburg, Hayden Cavanaugh (3-2) allowed one unearned run and two hits in six innings to earn the win for the Skyhawks (13-20, 9-15) in FVC Fox play against the Knights (8-27, 7-17). Marian Central 17, Grant 1 (5 inn.): At Fox Lake, Steve Zubryzcki hit a three-run homer in Marian’s 11-run first inning as the Hurricanes (22-9) won a non-conference game. Antioch 4, Marengo 1: At Marengo, Jarvis Hernandez had two hits, but the Indians (4-29) lost in non-conference action. Wheaton Academy 1, Hampshire 0: At West Chicago, Shane Hernandez allowed one run in six innings, but the Whip-Purs (15-17) got shut out on three hits in non-conference action. SOFTBALL IHSA Class 2A Harvard Regional: At Harvard, the Harvard softball team didn’t have its ace in the pitcher’s circle for the regional championship, but the Hornets still found a way to win. Harvard’s Iede Rossmiller pitched all seven innings in her first varsity start, striking out three and allowing one earned run, and the Hornets’ offense collected 14 hits and drew seven walks to beat North Boone, 12-6. Harvard (22-9) will play Rock Falls in a Rock Falls Sectional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Lindsay Melson, Harvard’s ace, came out of the Hornets’ regional semifinal Tuesday with a cracked rib. Melson had made every start for Harvard before Saturday. Wauconda 5-8, Huntley 4-0: At Wauconda, the Red Raiders (21-12) dropped both games of a doubleheader in non-conference action. In Game 1, Amanda Wisniewski went 3 for 3 with two home runs, a double and two RBIs. Andrew 10, Marengo 2: At Tinley Park, the Indians (31-4) lost in non-conference action. Lauren Roudabush went 2 for 2 with a run, and Chloe Montgomery finished 2 for 3 with an RBI. Grant 5, Marian Central 4: At Fox Lake, the Hurricanes (10-11) lost a non-conference game.
