


Chamberlain leads Johnsburg’s victoryJOHNSBURG – It says a lot when a team can rely on a player to have a productive game when it matters most. For Johnsburg (12-20), Mary Chamberlain is that player “We can always count on [Chamberlain] to play great,” Skyhawks coach Wally Warner said. “She controlled the game with good location on her pitches and made some outstanding plays defensively.” Chamberlain (10-14) pitched a complete game, striking out five for fourth-seeded Johnsburg (12-20) in an 8-1 victory against fifth-seeded Grayslake Central in an IHSA Class 3A Lakes Regional play-in game. Chamberlain also went 2 for 4, scored two runs and drove in another. Courtney Thoren had three RBIs, Megan Becker drove in two, and Mary Kate Wright and Jordan Hauck each reached base twice for Johnsburg, which plays top-seeded Antioch today in the semifinals at Lakes. Class 4A Cary-Grove Regional: At Crystal Lake, Shannon McGinnis went 4 for 4, doubling and driving in two runs for fourth-seeded Crystal Lake South in a 14-1, five-inning victory against fifth-seeded Round Lake. Jackie Wolf pitched four innings with a strikeout and three walks. The Gators (14-15) will face top-seeded Cary-Grove today in the semifinals. Cary-Grove 4, Wauconda 3: At Cary, Lindsay Efflandt (24-3) did not allow a hit in pitching the first 31⁄3 innings to earn the win for the Trojans (28-6) in the non-conference game. Efflandt returned to the mound with two outs in the top of the seventh to strike out a Wauconda batter with the bases loaded to earn the save. She also went 0 for 2 but drove in two runs on sacrifice flies. Emma Gaulke was 2 for 3 with an RBI. BASEBALL Class 3A Belvidere North Regional: At Marengo, Jake Tucker pitched a complete game for fourth-seeded Marengo (5-29), striking out four, in an 11-6 victory against Rockford East. AJ Lohff went 3 for 4 with a single, double and triple for Marengo, Ryan Hoff drove in two runs, and Danny Domek went 2 for 3 with a double. Marengo will face top-seeded Belvidere North in the semifinals Wednesday. Class 4A Dundee-Crown Regional: At Carpentersville, Tyler Gross was 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs to lead fourth-seeded Dundee-Crown to a 10-4 victory against fifth-seeded Elgin in a play-in game. Jake Romano and Steve Schwartz also homered for D-C (13-22), which meets top-seeded South Elgin at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Zach Vodicka (5-5) pitched six innings and struck out four in the victory.
