Three girls soccer teams remain

Three local soccer teams won regional titles and advanced to sectional semifinals taking place today.

Here is a look at what awaits Marian Central, Cary-Grove and Huntley as they start the second round of the postseason:

Class 2A Hampshire Sectional

Marian Central vs. Freeport,
6 p.m. today: The Hurricanes roll into the sectional fresh off an upset of top-seeded Hampshire on Friday. The ’Canes have felt a bit overlooked and underrated this season, despite posting an 18-4-1 record. Marian won its first regional title since 2005 and is set on adding a sectional title to its trophy cabinet this spring.

Freeport (18-3-1) will pose some challenges offensively. The Pretzels trailed Belvidere North, 1-0, on Friday in a regional final, but then scored four unanswered goals and won, 5-1. It was the third consecutive regional title for Freeport, which went on to win a sectional last season before losing in a supersectional to Sycamore.

Julia Luecke and Hope Stayer lead the Pretzels’ attack. The ’Canes will counter with forward Harmony Kendroza and midfielders Lauren Grady, Katie Przybysz and Shannon Grady.

Class 3A Boylan Sectional semifinalS

Cary-Grove vs. Boylan,
5 p.m. today: The Trojans upset top-seeded Crystal Lake South on Friday to advance to meet the Titans, who will have home-field advantage.

Boylan (19-2) is led by forwards Alex Fahlbeck, Ariel Miller and Moriah Schwarz and midfielder Abby Reed. The Titans have eight shutouts this season thanks to junior goalkeeper Kiley Beck and won their second consecutive Northern Illinois Conference-10 title this season.

C-G (14-7) will counter with sophomore forward Korey Kronforst, who has accounted for three of the Trojans’ four postseason goals and assisted on the other. Senior forward Brittany Kroening scored the Trojans’ other goal.

Huntley vs. Barrington,
7 p.m. today: The Red Raiders lost to the Fillies in last season’s sectional final, and winning a sectional is one hurdle Huntley has yet to clear in spite of all the strides its program has made in six years under coach Kris Grabner.

Huntley (21-3-1) is stacked with much of the same talent it had last season. Aimee Wronski scored her 28th goal of the season last week in a regional title win against Guilford, and junior forward Emily Konior is equally dangerous up top.

Barrington (22-2-3) has freshman forward Molly Pfeiffer, who has scored five game-winning goals this season, and the Fillies have posted 19 shutouts. They also have won three sectional titles in the past five years.
